Default Dell Mini 12 Gets SSD Speed Boost in Japan - 03-01-2009, 08:25 PM

Portable Monkey reports that some Dell Mini 12 owners in Japan have replaced their standard PATA HDD with an Mtron SSD, rewarding them with an albeit pricey, but significant speed boost.

I don't see what the big deal is here. Any laptop running a standard 2.5" drive can have it swapped out for a 2.5" SSD if the user wants to pony up the dough.

First, The Dell Mini 12 has a 1.8" PATA SSD, not a 2.5" SATA drive.
Second, availability of 1.8" PATA SSDs have been very limited until recently.

Its still just a matter of ponying up the dough.

Wonder what this upgrade does to battery life? Should increase it, I'd think. The Mini-12 with 1gb ram is great with Ubuntu. Give it some stretch to its untethered life and it starts to turn into a real performer. Too bad it can't run OSX. Not that I care to install it, but the compatability would be marvelous.

if the 12 was able to swap out memory. i would of bought it over the 9 or maybe buy both LOL
