Default Alienware M11x gets Core iX and NVIDIA Optimus Update - 06-08-2010, 11:18 AM

Earlier today, Dell beefed their powerhouse gaming netbook, the Alienware M11x, with Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors as options, politely dropping the old Core 2 Duo options.

Also, the Alienware M11x now comes with NVIDIA Optimus, a technology by NVIDIA which optimises battery performance by switching power to the GPU when it's needed, and turning it off again when it's not. We've seen similar implementations in the previous revision of the m11x, but because it was a custom driver by Dell, it was impossible to update the display drivers individually without overwriting the other GPU usage completely. Many members of our Alienware forum reported this problem.

This doesn't appear to have effected the price at all, the Alienware M11x is still available with Pentium Dual Core for £749/$799, or with the newer Core i processors for £849/$949. Meaning thaat yes, you can still get one for under $1000, and yes, the UK is still getting shafted.

A massive platform update should result in a name change. "m11z", "m11x+", etc.

Still, it sounds good.

Okay, Dells pricing is crazy, if you go to the M11x's home page, it says starting at $799.

I'm talking about the bandwagon jumpers that need to stay ahead of moores law. They will buy a new c2d and sell their "old" ones typically cheap... especially when they realize that 11" screens arent for everyone and really want to get something for it.

I was an early adopter of the M11x - I bought within several days of release. And I'm still very happy with it. The small screen makes for perfect carrying weight and portability, IMO.

I'd only sell mine if I could get a decent amount for it, and probably turn around and snag an i5 or an i7 M11x anyway.

Cheers,
Charlie
