Default Mini 12 gets Ubuntu and XP option, now $499 - 12-16-2008, 10:02 PM

The Dell Mini 12 has had its configurations expanded with XP and Ubuntu options added. As base package you can now select either Ubuntu or XP, in either low or high-spec, with Vista as an optional free 'upgrade' from XP. Although judging from the reviews, it is strongly not recommended!

In the UK, there is now an Ubuntu version on offer currently for £322, and the existing Vista config at £370. Still only available in black though and no sign of XP!

Interesting news - I'm still leery of the hardware platform of the Mini 12, though.

The OS can't compensate for under-powered RAM.

I'd really like to hear a review of the Ubuntu version!

This definitely makes it more tempting, but, I don't know if a 150 bucks more is worth the extra size of the system.

Yesterday evening, I purchased the Ubuntu version of the Mini 12. I posted my reasons at my own site for why I didn't go with the Mini, but basically it came down to screen resolution. With Linux on the mini, the max 1GB RAM doesn't worry me as much as it would with Windows XP and especially Vista.

Currently, my Mini 12 is scheduled to arrive in early January. We'll see how that goes...

My Dell order status is showing the Mini 12 shipped today! Perhaps I'll be seeing my Ubuntu Mini 12 for Christmas afterall! Originally, I wasn't supposed to see the Mini 12 ship until after the New Year!.

I received my Mini 12 with Ubuntu pre-installed late yesterday evening. Boot-up time with Ubuntu is around 1 minute as opposed to the reported 2 1/2 minutes to boot-up with Vista. The 1GB of memory is more than enough for Linux (and possibly XP). You have the option of a default Dell Mini Desktop or the original Ubuntu desktop.

First impression of the hardware is it is light, sturdy, and fast. However, with a 12 inch screen it may not be unique enough from regular laptops to get the niche following that the Mini 9 has. Still, I think I'm going to like the Mini 12, especially when traveling.

Yeah it can and DOES.

Xp runs about 4x faster than Vista - since running Xp I would actually rate this a decent speed notebook. Next to no latency on anything bar video consuming software (google earth chugs) but firefox, office apps etc are all near instant loads...bootup is fast and resuming from standby to active takes about 10 seconds.
