Based on my very brief tests it was only about 2 minutes. I think there might be some way to force-restart wpa_supplicant and get it to connect faster, but if it's that simple I'd think Dell would have figured that out.

Chrome OS 'Diet' version fits on a 1GB USB key, brings more WiFi support -- Engadget

Supposedly you can get a new "Chrome OS Diet" version here ...
http://carbon.hexxeh.net/chromiumos/mac.html

"Hexxeh is back with a Chrome OS Diet flavor, which cuts the fat and gets the OS onto a 1GB drive. It supposedly doesn't cut anything features-wise, and actually improves WiFi support since it's based on a newer build."

However, when I checked out the The Chromium Projects page, under Developer Hardware, It lists under "Developer hardware list" the Dell Mini 10V as being supported but with caveat "Need to replace wifi card." ????

Maybe someone can tweak this version with Dell's version with wifi support???

Thanks!

My problem is not with network connectivity, I am able to connect to wifi and/or ethernet just fine -- however, when connected, I cannot access any sites unless going directly to their IP address.

AKA I cannot load google.com, but I can load 74.125.45.100.

Thats an issue with Dell's 8GB build...the smaller 1GB lite version supposedly doesn't have that problem.

BTW: Google isn't planning to officially release this OS until a year from now and it is very much beta!

the problem with not be able to resolved any ip address is because the /etc/resolved.conf file (something like that) has a "hardcoded" ip address as the nameserver.

For some reason the whole image in the 8GB is read only, so you can't vi the file within the image.

What I did was mount the third partition in some other unix distro (/dev/sdb3), and manually change the resolved.conf file in there (with the ip of my dns server, aka router

To get a terminal shell you can do ctrl+atl+T.

I can't really see much point on this OS, I do agree, it boots fast, but it's nothing special, it's just a optimized Linux distro that instead of loading a X Windows desktop manager, it loads a browser. Don't know, maybe I'm too old, but I would stick with my XP+EWF which boots nearly at the same speed

Confirmed that the diet version DNS resolution works fine and doesn't suffer the same problem as the bloated Dell version...just waiting on the added broadcom wireless support at this point...

yep, the Diet version is far better. It picks my Intel 3945 without hassle, and it has the nameserver set to 127.0.0.1 which would work.

As soon as you got it working, press Fn+K (F8) to get a Keyboard picture with all the Chrome shortcuts and ctrl+alt+t for a terminal. I must admit, it has potential It's a fast and polish GUI which is not usual these days (too much rubbish around)
Still, 1GB it's a little too much for just just those options, but maybe is a keeper
