Default [VIDEO] Youtube HD Playback after 10.1 update - 11-18-2009, 12:35 PM

I was getting all giddy and excited about the new Flash 10.1 pre-release update, which primary functions as far I'm concerned is allowing video playback to be offloaded onto the GPU. Let's be honest our Atom processors just aren't upto scratch for decoding HD flash movies on the fly so running flash videos on the GPU should really help performance, especially on the GMA 500 which has built in video decoders, and in theory, allow smooth Youtube/Hulu HD playback.

However like a lot of netbook owners, I was disappointed to discover that the GMA 950 (DM9, 10v) and GMA 500 (10,12) aren't listed on the compatible hardware. Major bummer. However are perusing the blogosphere last night, I noticed a few people had claimed they could now play Youtube HD smoothly after installing the update. Notably on Engadget, Gizmodo, Liliputing and on our own forums. There is a lot of speculation as to whether these users were experience greater playback due to the flash update, as according to Adobe they really shouldn't have.

This prompted to me make this (my first!) video displaying Youtube HD playback on the Dell Mini 9 and Dell Mini 10 before AND after to see if there really was any difference. Sound on the video has come out pretty much inaudible but it sounded perfect on my computer. That's my excuse anyway!
As you can see the results aren't great, and in conclusion I would not recommend installing it until the full stable version is released, which hopefully will include support for our minis!

I installed 10.1 on my mini 9 dual boot xp OSX. In OSX it still stutters, in XP 720p videos from hulu now play with out stutter in full screen.

Yeah even though they released different versions for each OS, they state that the hardware acceleration is only currently supported in Windows.

sooo interesting note about mini 1010 playback. uninstalled 10 and installed 10.1, went to test on hulu and got that same weird gray (and smoother but not fluid) so I started searching teh interwebz and found this little gem Flash Platform in Action - Flash Player 10.1 on the Palm Pre | Adobe TV

which works fine. clearly dropping frames and cpu is 100% but it isn't gray and quality/resolution looks high. curious

interestingly, this helped me play flash HD on my snow leopard install, and did help a little in windows 7, but i still noticed stuttering.

but snow leopard plays hd trailers at youtube pretty much perfectly now!

I have been waiting for this 10.1 update for a long time. I have the Crystal HD Decoder in my Dell Mini.

I can play back that same video and CPU runs at about 65% the whole time. I can not tell how well the Crystal HD Card is working without more tests, if even at all.

People who want to try this new version. Make sure you uninstall the old version and then install the new version. I had to reboot after uninstall before the new version would install correctly. You can check your flash version just by googling "check flash version" with no quotes. Its one of the top results.

The latest available through windows update, ( I have version 8.14.10.2011 on my mini 12 so probably the same)

when installing the flash update it did not prompt me to close firefox and other apps, but it did not actually update until I ran the updater with everything else close.

Basically if youtube isn't broken, it didn't install :P

ok... I have tried with the Vista drivers... .1006
Video decoding works perfect... But the resizing of the video is not accelerated anymore, so image quality it's not very good. And above all... .1006 remember me a LOT of problems under win7.... So now we have to use three drivers: iegd for opengl 2.0 and good dx9, vista ones for flash decoding, win7 ones for aero&stability... I hope that intel release a new win7 drivers with the fix VERY soon, because differently for games flash support and DXVA decoding is essential for MIDs, and Intel know this well: many releases of drivers in the last year are for fixing DXVA decoding and Flash...

A little note: flash 10.1 will have a complete accelerate decoding (not video, but ALL it's vector rendering through opengl ES... OUR GMA500 have a FULL support, under Linux, with the IEGD drivers, for opengl ES 2.0... (neither ATI or NVIDIA have it XD)
