Default JKK Mobile Review + Benchmark Runcore SSDs - 12-02-2008, 09:34 PM

JKK have gotten hold of a new Runcore solid state drive for the Dell Mini 9, as expected the benchmarks show some impressive results, especially with the currently-lacking write speed.

I don't want to steal their thunder so hit the via link for more info and the benchmarks.

I wish he'd install OSX and try to sleep with that SSD. He had that drive 3+ weeks before any of the rest of us (we're still all about a week out at best). It would really be helpful if we knew whether or not that works. I imagine most of us will purchase it anyways, simply due to the size and speed.

Yeah, I wish he did that to. But he's going off of stock xp so at least there will be benchmark he can compare to other machines and previous installs. One thing I'm really curious about is boot time speed and hibernate in xp. Two separate issues I know but it takes over a minute for Ubuntu and xp to boot. As you know Una Mac OS X is king here, wonder if it'll be faster?

I doubt it. The read speed is nearly identical to the STEC. It's only the write speed that appears to be triple. Might help with the NTFS boot time, since it writes every time it reads.. heh..

Im pretty sure that i will be ordering one of these, but i am also wondering about the USB capability of the port on the drive. Setting up the internal GPS on the hard drive instead of hard modding it into the case. Gotta try and not void that warranty

So the USB port IS on these SSD's? The mydigital website says this..

* Unlike the Asus PCI-E SSD This drive does not include the Master Micro USB port. Through no fault of RunCore Dell decided not to put a USB bus on the PCI-E Slot.

Is that a different USB port?

The EEE version has what amounts to a 1-port hub on it, very useful for internal mods w/o soldering to the motherboard. The Dell Mini PCI-E SSD slot does not have a USB port on it, so the Dell part doesn't have this port.

Both parts have a USB connector for using the card as an external USB disk.

The Dell SSD has a "SLAVE" usb port. This means that you can clone your other drive directly to it by connecting it directly to a usb port on your DELL mini. This way you can clone your drive and then just install your ssd in your mini and turn it on and it will be ready to go.
It DOES NOT have a "MASTER" usb port. The master is what would allow you to connect another device to it after it is installed into your machine.

Great video! In it, he mentions an application for cloning the hard drive onto the new SSD. I didn't catch the name of it - anyone know? Thanks!
