Default Dell to offer Mini 10v preloaded with Moblin for developers - 09-23-2009, 07:44 PM

Today at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, Dell and Intel announced that Dell would be selling a "Developer Edition" of the Mini 10v preloaded with Moblin Linux 2.0. This is aimed at software developers who want to create applications that run under Moblin on netbooks and handhelds. It should be orderable tomorrow (9/24).

Dell representatives told me that this was not a "consumer" offering and that not all of the Moblin software is fleshed out for the Mini 10v, but Dell did say that they will offer Moblin on netbooks in the future.

I took these photos at the show. I have never seen a 10v in person before so don't know if it looks different than others.

wow, fantastic that they are offering moblin on the 10v while the "premium" mini 10 with the "high definition" screen package (read, costs more damn money) adopters are left out in the cold when it comes to decent driver support! thanks dell ... grumble grumble

It should have a touch screen. Moblin has obviously (big sliders, big buttons, big menu icons) been designed for touch.

Maybe that's why the screen bezel is shiny?

Status: A little slow to boot. Otherwise perfect!

Remember - this is intended as a developer system, not fully end-user.

Anyone who wants Moblin can download it for free from moblin.org.

Dunham, I thought you'd enjoy the forum plug... I chatted with the Dell folks a while - one of them had a personal Mini 9 with him and they were well aware of the "hackintosh" community. I also saw a Mini 9 in Microsoft's booth running Windows 7.

There is also a Moblin Remix Edition floating around that is based on Ubuntu code.

I liked Moblin but I don't think it has NTFS support because I couldn't browse to my Windows partition. I guess you could install NTFS-3G but I was too lazy too.

I saw several different distribution vendors with Moblin at IDF. The one I talked to most was Canonical (Ubuntu), and it is their version that Dell is shipping.
