Default Dell Inspiron 11z Now Available to the US - 08-18-2009, 04:44 PM

The latest Dell Inspiron laptop is now on sale in the US. Listed just as a normal notebook, the Dell Inspiron 11z is missing the "mini" brand in not just name but hardware also. Replacing the Intel Atom processor range is a more common Intel Celeron processor and Intel GS45 graphics chip. Accompanying this is 2GB of RAM which means you guessed it, Windows Vista.

From the outside, the Inspiron 11z looks very much to be in the same ball park as the Mini 10, expect to see the same ports, a similar keyboard, a similiar price and the familiar "Inspiron" text sitting above the screen.

Concerning me most is the lack of "Mini" in the title, especially with the demise of the Dell Mini 12. Do you think Dell feel they went too far with a 12 inch mini? If a 12 inch laptop is called a "mini" then surely an 11.6inch should? The blurry line between netbook and notebook is certainly starting to come into view.

Forums on the way once we've made the decision to whether or not we cover this product.

Check out the Dell Inspiron 11z.

This is going to get confusing:

Inspiron Mini 13 now listed on Dell Canada website

Engadget reports that Dell Canada have listed a 13" 2.4GHz C2D HD4330 laptop as a Mini. Maybe they named the 11z as the 11z because it uses CULV Intel?

Where is the Bluetooth in the 11z? I'm alarmed by its absence, and I can only think that they will, in a few months, annoy all of us by adding a bunch of neat accessories that we'll wish we waited for.

Still, 2Gb is nice. If it can be Hackintoshed, I'm there.

I expect Dell, going forward, to reserve the Mini name for products that can be classified as netbooks, with 10.2" or smaller screens.

According to the product page, Bluetooth is coming soon, along with a whole bunch of other features (ie. 6 cell battery, larger HDD, etc.). What surprised me is that wireless-N isn't mentioned at all, even as an upcoming feature. That must be a mistake - I can't imagine that they don't plan to add it at some point.

I bet it will game alot better than the GMA 950 anyway, but its still Intel, and no one is expecting Crysis on one of these...

Dell is still missing the mark on something small, cheap, and with some dedicated GFX (IE- ION or Yukon)...

It is still a mini. Sort of.

Dell is pretty clever. As far as benchmark scores, the Celeron M 723 1.2ghz is just barely below a Z530 or N270 but still doesn't produce much heat.

Lack of bluetooth is kind of a bummer. It is really sad is that it ships with Windows Vista. I wonder if XP/Linux didn't go over well or if WinTel is just twisting their arm. Don't answer that, I am certain it is the latter.

does this intel chipset support a 4GB memory chip or just 2GB? Newegg.com - Kingston 4GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Laptop Memory Model KVR800D2S6/4G - Laptop Memory would be sweet to throw in there
