Default Dell Mini 12 Discontinued - 08-07-2009, 06:51 PM

According to reports to Engadget it seems that Mini 12, that has been unavailable in Europe ever since the Mini 9 close down, is now not available in the USA either.

This could all be part of preparations for the expected Dell Mini 11, supposedly a light weight slim-line addition to the Inspiron Mini series.

On a related note, I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my Mini 12 and the install was flawless, all the hardware and drivers were detected and updated with a simple Windows Update, unlike an XP install, those who've done it will know what I mean! Windows 7 really does draw out the Mini 12s potential, it's a shame to see any product discontinued just when Windows 7 was about to really rock the boat.

Intel is going to stop shipping Z series Atoms to those who are using them in netbooks soon, so this shouldn't be too surprising. The mini 10 will probably change processors and a new bigger netbook was on the roadmap posted here I believe.

A 12 inch Z-Atom Netbook is useless anyway. If its gonna be 12 inches, throw some ATI or Nvidia in it and it might be more interesting...

I thought that Microsoft was defining a mini as anything less then 10.2" for their license discount on Win 7. So a new Mini 9 with ION graphics would be awesome. I would happily replace my existing Mini 9 with one. And although I don't run windows it would be a welcome addition to a great little Linux Netbook.

Default About Win7 in the Mini 12 - 08-09-2009, 09:19 PM

Hi! What about the Aero Glass theme? Have you activated it? Or are you using the basic one? Because Aero for me work very speedy... (I have a mini 10 (not 10v)) But I get many bsod, with the driver from the Intel site.

Microsoft was limiting Windows 7 Starter Edition to the small screen sizes. Larger sizes needed the Home edition or higher.

I'm glad to see them dump the 12-inch "netbook", but am I the only one who hates the trend towards the 10" so-called sweet spot?

My Mini 9 is still slightly bigger than I would like it to be (I had one of the early eee machines from Asus, which were just about the perfect size), but I can live with it. Ideally, I'd like an 8.5"-9" screen with higher resolution. My only option for an upgrade may be an overpriced Sony.

For me the Mini 12 is a poor man notebook. Just nice for video watching and net surfing. 9" or 10" will be too small.
