Default RunCore and Quality Control - Starting to have concerns - 10-30-2009, 11:46 PM

Hi all,

I want to throw out a general concern I'm starting to have about the RunCore SSDs - I'm really not trying to pick a fight, but so far, I've struck out three times with RunCore SSDs.

I originally ordered a T-Style 32GB Pro IV for my Mini 9 - it arrived, and was immediately fried when I put it into my Mini. (see this thread: RunCore ProIV getting killed in new mini9s )

Before I read the above thread, the RMA arrived and I installed it, which was fried again.

At this point, I chose to exchange the second fried T-Style 32GB Pro IV for a standard RunCore 64GB PATA that seems to be working well for everyone on the forum.

It arrived today, and when I installed it in my Mini, it immediately activated my previously inactive hard drive password in the BIOS (now a permanently activated feature in my BIOS), and requested a BIOS password (that I didn't have) for changing any settings in the BIOS and accessing it - this thread on a different forum explains exactly what happened (not me, just a similar situation): Runcore 32GB SSD - Hdd password - Dell Mini 9 - TweakTown Forums and Runcore 64GB SSD - brand new drive has HDD Password - TweakTown Forums

I'm starting to have some serious doubts about RunCore's quality control, testing and fabrication. What have been others' experience with RunCores? Am I just on a bad string of luck?

I will say that the folks at MDD have been very accommodating, but I am starting to wonder if I should just go with a different brand.

I also just received my 32gb Runcore SSD yesterday. This morning I installed it and pressed '0' when the Dell logo appeared (per Mini manual). I immediately got the "Enter HDD Password" screen. Now I am stuck! Please help. Will call MDD on Monday unless someone has an answer for this.

Quality concerns were a big reason I never went with a Runcore back when I had my Mini 9. I had read more than enough stories of the drives failing back then that it wasn't worth the extra money for me to risk it.

I have an original non T style 64gig runcore SSD running since Jan 09 - everyday for work and have had 0 problems. Also have another installed in my kids mini 9 running win 7 and again running with 0 problems.

Suspect the main issue relates to the T style shorting out, have also read about the problems with some operating systems failing on installation or reporting 0 indicating they have failed. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones but I have not had any issues at all.

I received my 32G SSD and it did not work. Called Tech Support and he told me it was a bad controller and to send it back. He said he was sending me an email with instructions in five minutes. Waited two days and never received it. Called back, got his answering machine and left a message. Waited another day, no reply. Called back to customer service, young lady said she would email me a RMA number in five minutes but also gave me an RMA number. Never received the email, but sent the SSD back with the form off the internet and have not heard back yet. I understand there was a backorder after looking at their website but it would be nice to hear something from someone concerning this. I will wait another day before calling to check since they just got some more back in to see what my status is. I asked for a replacement and not my money back. Hopefully I didn't make a mistake in doing so.

I have to say that the previous post mirrors my experience with MDD customer support. Everyone I've spoken with re: the 3 (and counting) RunCores I've had to return has been extremely *nice* but what I really want to know is when and why things are happening with my orders. It's a bit hard to get follow-through from MDD - I've had to initiate every communication.

While we recognize that there is no excuse when issues like this occur, we are honestly sorry for causing any concerns with any orders. While we continue to look into new ways to get information to our customers, we do have this forum to help clear up any issues. If you have any questions regarding your individual orders please feel free to PM me and I be happy to give you an answer to the best of my ability.

Default Thanks MyDigital - 11-09-2009, 01:13 PM

I received my replacement 32G SSD for my Mini9 and installed it. At first it didn't show up on my Mini9 but then I remembered reading in the forum about the screws for holding the SSD in place. I had screwed them in tight so I backed them off a little and the SSD showed up on my Mini9. I then installed the operating system and it is running.

I just received my RMA 64GB Runcore Pro from MDD (4th RMA to-date) - so far it is accepting an OS X installation just fine.

HOWEVER, in the BIOS settings, I noticed under security that the hard drive password setting now reports "HDD PASSWORD FROZEN."

This was from a fresh out-of-the-box RunCore - what does this mean? Will it lock up like the previous and start asking me for a password? Anybody from MDD care to comment?

There have been other reports of this. My recollection is that you need to RMA it again.
