Default HOWTO: Upgrade your bios with OS X - 03-29-2009, 12:31 AM

The current latest bios for the mini 9 is A05. The current latest bios for the Vostro A90 is A04. They are equal in terms of updates, etc.

Use this guide to upgrade your Dell Mini 9 Or Vostro A90 running Mac OS X to the latest Bios from Dell.

1) If you have a mini 9...

White Dell Mini 9 | OS X 10.6.4 | BIOS A05 | 8GB STEC SSD | 2GB RAM
8GB Class 6 SDHC | 0.3MP Cam | NBI: 0.8.4 RC1
No Int. BT | USB Legacy support : [Enabled] | Mic Working via ALC268.kext

Hello Appleguru,

I am unclear on one thing. I am trying to follow your guide at the very top of this posting. I am unclear on FreeDos. You mention it in step 9. However, you had made no previous reference to it.

Without having FreeDos installed on my USB drive, when I tried to boot with it, of course, I get an error message that says something to the effect that there is "no operating system found". Am I missing something here? One needs to have an OS of some sort on the USB to boot with it. It seems like you have referred to FreeDos but you did not mention in any prior steps about how to obtain/install it on a USB flash drive. Am I missing something here or can you please clarify and help me?

Many thanks!!!

Just follow all the steps! FreeDOS is included in the image that you are copying your flash drive when you run the dd command.

Hey guys.

Thanks for the guide! This fixed an issue that I had with sleep where the computer would sleep only if you closed the lid twice. Example:

You close the lid, immediately open it up, and close it again and then the Vostro A90 would go to sleep. Otherwise, it would freeze if you left the lid closed too long.

Just FYI, I have Legacy USB enabled and Bluetooth disabled. Now my sleep works perfectly!

Thanks again!

How long is "a while"? I'm at this stage and it has been sitting at the apple logo for about an hour. Should I restart the dell or am I just getting antsy?

Default A bit o help please

Edit: I was taking the disk ID from the partition, not the drive itself. Ooops.

I keep getting the no operating system found message when I boot to the USB device on my A90. I used the flasher.img downloaded from the A90 link. I've tried with several different USB drives ranging from 64MB to 1GB.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Just a quick note to say thank you! I was nervous about doing this, but your guide couldn't have been easier to follow. Everything seems to be working just fine.

Thanks again!

Upgraded to A05, no issues. It was quick. Very Clear instructions, thank you op.

Not sure whether it is because of this upgrade, booting is quicker now, laptop sleep/unsleep process has improved (earlier I had to hard reboot sometimes after sleep).
