If you've got a Mini 9 with the Dell 5530 HSPA / Mobile Broadband module, here's what you need to know to get it going:
If you're having problems, you may need to enter your APN manually. Back in the connection properties, change the 'telephone number' to the name of your APN. The APN will vary depending on which mobile operator you use - for example, if you're a contract Vodafone UK customer, the APN will be 'internet'. Try http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html for details on UK APNs.

For KisMAC users this is useful except that you can't choose the correct serial device. Instead, I used gpsd and connected to it locally. |

| Junior Member Posts: 15 Join Date: Sep 2009 | Ok a quick update that might help someone else. Summary: UK Vodafone PrePaid 60 day trial sim not working under OSX 10.6.1 Progress: I put a mate's vodafone 3G dongle sim in my mini and using the script attached to this forum and it works fine! I had to have the Phone Number field BLANK, nothing in it. I also had 'web', 'web' for the username and password, but I don't think this was necessary. If I have anything in the Phone Number field it doesn't work , seems that the APN is quite important. However I still can't get the vodafone supplied one working. I can't even getting it working under Windows XP; using the vodafone software I just get "Searching for networks". Also if I stick the sim in a vodafone mobile I get the message "Sim Inactive", implying that Dell haven't activated the sime before shipping? Can anyone else that is having issues with Vodafone UK offer try this? Off to try and find out how to get the sim activated, looks like you need the sim number and the PHONE number, but I don't know what the phone number is! According to Montala it should 'just work' and that vodafone should send through details of the offer and phone number. Well-Finally arrived!! It's been 1 week since the dell delivery and nothing from vodafone yet. Anyone else got experience of this in the UK? Cheers Gavin |

| Junior Member Posts: 15 Join Date: Sep 2009 | Another update: Seems that some of the 60day vodafone trials in the UK do require the sim to be activated. See: 'searching For Network' Constantly On New Dell Studio - Vodafone eForum So called the number and eventually go through to a Tech guy, I'll think I took a note of the options I selected at work, I'll post it tomorrow. He took the SIM number and said that he'd submitted the SIM for activation, it would probably take about an hour but could take 24. Been trying the sim in an old Orange mobile to see if the message changes from 'Inactive SIM', after about 3 hours since calling vodafone I now get 'Emergency Calls Only', BUT it still doesn't work in XP or OSX. So I'll wait the 24 hours and try again. I hope my ramblings help someone else... ? Cheers Gavin |
