Default HOWTO: Using mobile broadband / WWAN module in OSX
by mbbrocks 01-26-2009, 11:30 AM

If you've got a Mini 9 with the Dell 5530 HSPA / Mobile Broadband module, here's what you need to know to get it going:
  • Download the following modem script: http://www.mobilebroadbandrocks.com/...-broadband.zip
Unzip the script and place it in your root:library:modem scripts folder.
Go into system preferences and select Network
Select ‘Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile’ from the list on the left
    Click on advanced
Under the modem tab, change the vendor to ‘other’ and select ‘Dell Mobile Broadband’ from the list, click on ok
Back on the network screen, enter ‘none’ as the telephone number. This means the modem script will use the default APN. If you want to specify the APN you want to use, enter it in the telephone number field (e.g. ‘internet’). Leave account name and password blank.
Select ’show modem status in menu bar’
    Click on apply
When you want to connect, click on the phone icon on the top menu bar, near the time. Click on ‘Connect Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile’ and you’re away.

If you're having problems, you may need to enter your APN manually. Back in the connection properties, change the 'telephone number' to the name of your APN. The APN will vary depending on which mobile operator you use - for example, if you're a contract Vodafone UK customer, the APN will be 'internet'. Try http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html for details on UK APNs.

Enabling GPS on Dell 5530 WWAN module | MobileBroadbandRocks.com

VERY interesting article on how to get the 5530 to blurt out valid GPS data ..
For KisMAC users this is useful except that you can't choose the correct serial device. Instead, I used gpsd and connected to it locally.

anyone know how to get signal strength, etc. the modem init script is temperamental for me - trying to figure out if it's a reception problem or something else

downloaded launch2net and tried messing with the files in the app to change the vendor and device id's in some files, but to no avail - i found a list of id's in a .h file - but i guess this would need compiling in some way? i assume there must be a way as people say the ericsson software for the ec400 works for the 5530 on windows..

Hi, Just wondering if anyone can tell me if 5530 will work in 10.5.8 NBM or in 10.6? I read somewhere (can't remember where) that it only works with DellEFI. Can someone clarify please?

Right, so i got my 10v the other day and got 10.6 working perfect, except it does not recognise my 5530 WWAN card. i've tried the aforementioned script and get the following error message:

CCLExit: -6019 (Modem error, modem not responding.)

Can anyone confirm that they have this script working with 10.6?

My 60 day trial on vodafone started when i ordered my 10v and i don't want any more days to run out!!!

plz help!!

Question Problem getting Vodaphone 60day UK free trial working under 10.6.1 - 10-17-2009, 10:39 PM

Hey;
I recently received my Dell Mini 10v from Dell, complete with the free 5530 WWAN card and 60day free Vodaphone free trial. However like others I've not been able to get it working.

Below is a extract from my ppp log with use verbose logging turned on.

I selecting card 1 or 2 doesn't make a difference and if I enter 'internet' it seems to fail sooner. I can add a log for this is it helps?

mmbrooks can you help?
Cheers
Gavin

Default Help - Dell Mini 10v - 10-20-2009, 11:10 PM

Hi I have a dell mini 10v configured with the Dell 5530 HSPA Mobile card.

I have activated and confirmed this card was functioning under WinXP with AT&T.

After installing OS X 10.5.6 and upgrading to 10.5.8 everything is working great and I see the Dell WWAN card (x2) under network settings. I copied the script from this thread into the modem script folder and selected Other as the Manufacturer and Dell Mobile Broadband as the device.

When I try and connect I get connecting message immediately followed by a disconnecting message and a popup that complains the modem settings are incorrect. I have tried entering the phone # assigned me by AT&T, None and isp.cingular into the phone # field but nothing has worked so far.

Can any one help? All suggestions greatfully received.

Thanks

Paul

Ok a quick update that might help someone else.

Summary:
UK Vodafone PrePaid 60 day trial sim not working under OSX 10.6.1

Progress:
I put a mate's vodafone 3G dongle sim in my mini and using the script attached to this forum and it works fine!

I had to have the Phone Number field BLANK, nothing in it. I also had 'web', 'web' for the username and password, but I don't think this was necessary.

If I have anything in the Phone Number field it doesn't work , seems that the APN is quite important.

However I still can't get the vodafone supplied one working. I can't even getting it working under Windows XP; using the vodafone software I just get "Searching for networks". Also if I stick the sim in a vodafone mobile I get the message "Sim Inactive", implying that Dell haven't activated the sime before shipping?

Can anyone else that is having issues with Vodafone UK offer try this?

Off to try and find out how to get the sim activated, looks like you need the sim number and the PHONE number, but I don't know what the phone number is!

According to Montala it should 'just work' and that vodafone should send through details of the offer and phone number.
Well-Finally arrived!!

It's been 1 week since the dell delivery and nothing from vodafone yet. Anyone else got experience of this in the UK?

Cheers
Gavin

Another update:

Seems that some of the 60day vodafone trials in the UK do require the sim to be activated. See: 'searching For Network' Constantly On New Dell Studio - Vodafone eForum

So called the number and eventually go through to a Tech guy, I'll think I took a note of the options I selected at work, I'll post it tomorrow.

He took the SIM number and said that he'd submitted the SIM for activation, it would probably take about an hour but could take 24.

Been trying the sim in an old Orange mobile to see if the message changes from 'Inactive SIM', after about 3 hours since calling vodafone I now get 'Emergency Calls Only', BUT it still doesn't work in XP or OSX.

So I'll wait the 24 hours and try again.

I hope my ramblings help someone else... ?
Cheers
Gavin
