Default HOWTO: Using mobile broadband / WWAN module in OSX - 01-26-2009, 12:30 PM

If you've got a Mini 9 with the Dell 5530 HSPA / Mobile Broadband module, here's what you need to know to get it going:

@janek: to check you have the HSPA installed, goto System Profiler:
Apple Menu > About this Mac... >> click More Info...

In the left column under 'Hardware' click 'USB', the modem should be listed on the right under one of the USB High-Speed Bus entries as:

Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile Broadband Minicard Device

@janek: sorry to hear that, sadly drivers can't fix everything!?!

You could try installing a WWAN card using this guide or these from JKK: hard or easy

But easiest would be to get an external USB WWAN modem.

  • Download the following modem script: http://www.mobilebroadbandrocks.com/...-broadband.zip
Unzip the script and place it in your root:library:modem scripts folder.
Go into system preferences and select Network
Select ‘Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile’ from the list on the left
    Click on advanced
Under the modem tab, change the vendor to ‘other’ and select ‘Dell Mobile Broadband’ from the list, click on ok
Back on the network screen, enter ‘none’ as the telephone number. This means the modem script will use the default APN. If you want to specify the APN you want to use, enter it in the telephone number field (e.g. ‘internet’). Leave account name and password blank.
Select ’show modem status in menu bar’
    Click on apply
When you want to connect, click on the phone icon on the top menu bar, near the time. Click on ‘Connect Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile’ and you’re away.

If you're having problems, you may need to enter your APN manually. Back in the connection properties, change the 'telephone number' to the name of your APN. The APN will vary depending on which mobile operator you use - for example, if you're a contract Vodafone UK customer, the APN will be 'internet'. Try GPRS information and UK settings for details on UK APNs.
ive been trying to get this to work for a couple days now, any idea on how to get this to connect to WAP.CINGULAR apn? No one seems to know and i would like this laptop to get internet everywhere not just a wifi location.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you the script work nice with my 3G sim!

B1FFY

for my ISP (Maxis 3g Malaysia)left the APN empty, because when i put the APN name it wont connect so just leave it empty because from the script i see it will automatically dial the listed phone number to connect eg for me is *99#

btw is there any software that can use our 3G modem to send and recieve sms or maybe even make call using it (maybe that not posible )

Thank you for the script!

First I don't get a connect and I tried to disable the sim-pin. But I still got a ppp-error.
Then I remove the second of the listed two "DELL Wireless HSPA Modems" and now it works!

Does anybody know of any software that will let you send and receive SMS's through the 5530 WWAN card for Mac OS X ?

i've noticed that the Vodafone software for Windows has that functionality.
