Default How to setup Snow Leopard on mini 10v with A06 BIOS
by jacques1171 09-11-2009, 12:06 AM

SL won't install the normal way with A06 BIOS it gives KP all the time I didn't want to downgrade Bios as I have had a mini 10 stop responding on the downgrade and the MB is "Fornication Upon Consent of the King" after this happens so I won't take the chance again apparently this happens to every few hundred or so Mini 10's. So I wanted to get a way to install it, this is what worked for me.

You need a Intel Mac and external drive enclosure (2.5 inch SATA)

UPDATE FROM Sat 17 October 2009

Remove keyboard
(you can find pdf on Dell's web site but it's easy)

1. Remove the 3 screws on the back behind the keyboard
2. Unclip the keyboard on the sides
3. From the top fold the keyboard onto the trackpad (be careful with the ribbon cable)
4. Undo the ribbon cable (or you can leave it connected but be careful)
5. Remove the screw that holds the HD and slide the HD to the left
Done

Setting up the Dell mini 10v BIOS A06 (this is what you need a Intel Mac for)

1. Fit the mini 10v HD into external enclosure and plug into you mac
2. Pop in the SL DVD and restart hold in the c key on you mac and boot into SL setup from the DVD
3. Install SL as normal but not onto internal HD install onto the external drive (your dell mini 10v drive) remember to format as GUID Partition
4. Reboot into this drive and setup as normal and do all updates (you can install the res of you applications, move over music and files as you would normally setup your Mac) Download the Netbookbootmaker 0.8.2 (don't use 0.8.3 it causes Kernal Panic) and Netbookinstaller 0.8.2 and 0.8.3 rc3 files expand and save to desktop u will need them later.
5. This step is the most important one install the Netbookbootmaker 0.8.2 and shut down DO NOT RESTART WHILE IT'S CONNECTED TO THE MAC
6. Fit the HD back into the Dell mini 10v and bootup into setup (F12) Make sure USB BIOS Legacy Support, USB Wake Support and Bluetooth is DISABLED (if you have Bluetooth fitted leave it on Enabled) save settings and reboot. The first time it starts it takes long just wait if it take longer than 10 minutes or it gives KP reboot again or try safe boot
7. When in the OS audio won't work so now install the NetbookInstaller 0.8.2 (tick generate dsdt file and leave all the other ticks as is)
8. Reboot, install NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 rc3 (don't generate dsdt file) and repair Disk Permissions
9. Reboot again and every thing works except restart after sleep.

Remember this has worked for me but it's not my fault if any thing goes wrong.(you could leave the drive in the external case and restart selecting USB and boot into the USB Drive, test everything first before you fit it back in the dell mini, you need USB legacy enabled for this and sleep won't work, but at least if any thing go wrong you don't have to remove the drive from the dell mini, this is from step 6)

For those that have already successfully installed 10.6.1, you should be able to upgrade by just using NBI 8.3rc4 in accordance with the directions in the 8.3rc4 test thread here:

http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/mac-...4-testing.html

For those who are doing a clean (new) install the word on the street is ...you have to use NBI 8.2 first to generate the dstl.aml file. Apparently there is a bug in 8.3rc4 where it does not generate this file.....so:

Quote:
The workaround for a new install:
Run 0.8.2 selecting only 'create dstl file'
Run 0.8.3.RC 4 picking Chameleon, extensions, make dstl, optional remote disc, optional bluetooth, etc.
Install the 10.6.2 update
Reboot
I will caveat this reply with the fact that I have not upgraded to .2 yet. 10.6.1 is absolutely flawless on my machine, and there is no reason for me to risk anything at this moment.

On another note, I have consolidated some user fixes and improvements that are not yet part of NBI. You can find it here:

After reading many of the posts in these forums I ordered a Mini 10v on Sunday with Bluetooth and the upgraded wireless card for "n". I assume that my BIOS will be A06. I plan on running SL 10.6.1. Did I make a mistake by getting BT and the upgraded wireless card? I can't seem to find validation where the upgraded card works and it seems that BT has some issues.

I have the same setup, except I purchased through the Outlet (refurb), so mine came with bios A05. If yours is direct from Dell, then yes I assume it will come with the latest bios.

Anyway, Blue Tooth works great, and the Wireless N works great as well (transmit rate of 300). Make sure when you get it to run Windows and test everything out (to include BT, CAM, Wireless).

Aaagh.
I am following these instructions to the letter, but cannot get my mac to boot from the dell drive. The mac isn't giving the dell drive as an option when rebooting. Any ideas?
UPDATE, but still aaargh.
Now when running netbook installer 0.8.3 it gets as far as copying dependencies, then I get a boxed message telling me to restart my computer by pressing the power key.
I have been through the loop several times, and have changed the bios usb legacy support & wake support setting, but this has made no difference.
I am not especially tecchie & am now officially struggling.
Any help/ideas.
Cheers, Rob

Guys, please help me out...

I'm at my wits end? Is audio supposed to work with NBI's ?

Because no matter ehat I try, no sound.

My method was using a Mini 9 as the "Mac"

- Mounted 320gb 7200rpm on an enclosure hooke to mini 9
- Installed SL to USB
- Booted into the mini 9 (not from USB, from mini 9)
- slapped the USB with NBM 0.8.2
- HDD into 10v (with USB, wake and BT dissabled)
- Booted, created account, ran NBI 0.8.2 + dsdt
- Reboot + Combo 10.6.1 + NBI 0.8.3rc3 (no dsdt) - Repair Perms - reboot
- NBI 0.8.4 rc4 + dsdt + Repair Permissions
- Reboot.

Now, all the way through, no audio !!!

someone help me?

Also, quick question, for 10.6.2... do I now just update and reboot? Or do I have to run NBI again?

Shouldnt it be NBM to fix the bootloader? I'm a bit confused here...

And now that we're at it... VoodooPowerMini ok with 10.6.2?

thanks!!

Guys,

if your on A06, you probably shouldn't be trying to go to 10.6.2 just yet. If you look around, I don't think anyone has .2 working properly on a mini with A06. i.e.) sound issues, boot loops, kernel panics, etc, etc. (because you have to use NBI 8.3rc4)

This also means quit messing around with NBI 8.3rc4 because rc4 is specific for 10.6.2. So any issues associated with rc4 and 10.6.2 with A06 are not fixable yet.

Meklort has eluded to the fact that a newer version of NBI will be released soon. Don't go jumping into it thinking it's going to work for A06 and 10.6.2....it might or it might not. These releases are "RC" this means "Release Candidates" aka - still in testing. Be patient and watch the boards. You'll find out fairly quickly if it is going to work or not because I'm sure someone with A06 is going to try it. Your other option is to downgrade your bios (search the forum)

Switching topics: Re: When should you run NBM or NBI.....Jacques is pretty specific on when to run NBI and how to do it. Please read his instructions.

I have tried this guide 15+ times using all of the different techniques posters have come up with and was never successful. I ended up downgrading to A04 and I suggest all of you having problems do the same. I downgraded, used NBM 0.8.2, then reisntalled in the mini, booted and ran NBI 0.8.3rc3 and then NBI 0.8.3rc4 and I have been running for a few days now without 1 kernel panic Before I could run NBM 0.8.2 but after resinstalling the drive back into the mini it would crash everytime I tried to run any of the netbook modifiers or fix disk permissions. On A04 everything works great.

Not trying to de-rail the topic, just wasn't worth all the trouble I was having like a lot of the posters seem to experiencing also.

After reading through all the topics on upgrading, I decided to follow this guide because I did not want to downgrade my BIOS. Although it seemed the easier route, I figured Dell installed A06 on my mini for a reason. I thought I would briefly share my weekend hackintosh experience. I followed Jacques's guide to the letter (thank you Jacques) but encountered a couple of glitches. First, I got kernel packet errors (screen telling you to restart while computer is locked) while running NBI 0.8.2 final. It happened 3 times in a row. Each time the process got further along before it locked until it finally ran completely. Same thing happened with NBI 0.8.3 RC3. At first I thought I was dead in the water and had to redo the entire process but something kept telling me to try it again. After completing the entire process my hackintosh kept giving KP's while repairing permission's. It would hang at 2 minutes remaining each time. So I remembered reading in a post (lots of research helps before starting the project), that running 0.8.3RC3 without generating a dsdt file seemed to help some people. It worked perfectly for me. I have been running for 3 days now with no issues. I also installed some of the fixes from Bear Hunters Tips & Tricks post. Thanks to Jacques, Bear Hunter & Merklot for all your posts. You guys made it easy for a noob. I love my hackintosh!
