Default NBI .8.4RC1 - only works in safe boot - 05-19-2010, 05:32 PM

If I run the NBI in safe mode, things work fine and I can then reboot the Dell Mini 9 normally - but no sound, sleep not seeming to work (although must triple check that usb legacy option). Am running 10.6.3.

If I run it in un-safe mode, it seems to complete ok, but on reboot, it gives the multi-language panic screen. I also dont get a pre-apple logo screen in which to do a safe boot - so its back to the usb external boot disk option.

Perhaps I have some old kexts, I have these in /Extra/Mini9Ext

AHCIPortInjector.kext IO80211Family.kext
AppleACPIBatteryManager.kext IOATAFamily.kext
AppleACPIPS2Nub.kext IOAudioFamily.kext
AppleHDA.kext IOSDHCIBlockDevice.kext
AppleIntelGMA950.kext LidSleep.kext
AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext NVEnabler.kext
AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext OSXRestart.kext
ApplePS2Controller.kext RealtekR1000.kext
CPUIDOverride.kext SMBIOSResolver.kext
CPUIDSymbols.kext VaioPEnabler.kext
ElliottForceLegacyRTC.kext fakesmc.kext

From what I've read, I should remove LidSleep.kext. Scratch that - thats the one I need and I see it loaded, if I use -kextstat.

Sleep seems ok, after I made sure the USB Legacy option was off.

I had been running NBI after plugging in an external drive, but then safe booting into the internal disk. I tried booting from the external drive (10.6 CD plus NBM .8.4RC1) and ran NBI. This seemed to work better, after the first boot, it came up with sound.. I then did a reboot - disabled the USB legacy stuff and then got the multi-language panic screen on boot

Tried reverting to 0.8.3RC4 - Sound and mic working with AppleHDA, but that puts it into a loop restarting after the chameleon boot page.

And now upgrading to 0.8.4RC1 does not work either, I think a re-install is in order

Thanks in advance,

And now after the re-install of SL(+0.8.4RC1)/10.6.3 patching is complete - I am back with a machine with sound now working and all my stuff in place - yahoo

VoodooHDA has a very odd "development" path. It went from being opensourced on google code to being randomly patched between "the really big forum that covers this stuff but is worse than a porn site with random posts" and some of the other known but smaller ones the more development-driven folks tend to frequent. Eventually, the folks @ posx that seemed to drive its development over the past 9 months would release attachments of the source/kext. However, in the past two months, it seems as if the russian-language section has now taken this over (they're at build 251 or 261 now) and using google translate doesn't work too well. On my desktop, I've periodically upgraded the kext with the various advancements after they get at least a few posts indicating they don't panic.

Beyond more card support, some work on clipping/better detection/optical, I'm not sure if any of this would be necessary since the 241 in 0.8.4 works fine, but if you're comfortable with getting one of the newer voodoohda.kext builds, I've had good luck on my desktop. Still on 0.8.3 and 10.6.2 with my mini9 so I don't have a need to test just yet
