Default Can I install Mac OS on USB Drive and clone? - 01-07-2010, 07:59 AM

Can I install OS X on an external hard drive then boot into it from my MacBook Pro, install BootMaker. Remove from MacBook Pro, boot 10v into OS X on external, then run CarbonCopy Cloner onto the 10v hard drive?

I think that is possible , but I cannot recall and point to any other post like this one.
BTW once you install OS onto external HD you need to run NBI (NetBookInstaller) and not BootMaker.
Copy NBI into Application folder on External HD, you will need it later again.

When you execute NBI, Be CAREFULL and MAKE SURE THAT YOU SELECT THE EXTERNAL HD otherwise you will mess up your MBP for GOOD !!
Some options are already selected for you. I will attempt to uncheck all of them but Chameleon bootloader. Since NBI is running on your MBP, it does know what kext (additional files for you Mini 10v) to install.

Remove USB HD from MBP, boot 10v from OS X external in safe mode. You should be able to do that pressing Controll key (CTRL) on the keyboard while booting (After the DELL logo and before the Apple logo). A big HD Icon should apper. At this point type "-x" without quotation. You shold see "boot: -x" at the lower left corner.

Once you are logged on, rerun NBI with default option selected but at least with: Install Dell Mini 10v Extentions, Regenerate ..... DSDS.aml file

Once is done, restart you mini 10v and cross your finger...

Hope this help

MS

P.S. I believe that you can CarbonCopy Cloner your MBP onto External HD instead of installing OS X from scratch

After you boot in safe mode and run NBI to get the correct extensions on the drive you’ll need to reboot and run the Update Extra.app from /Extra to correctly generate the kernel kext extensions cache files. The ones generated by NBI (which runs the Update app as part of its operations) during safe boot only have the safe extensions in those cache files and you want them all hence the need to re-run Update after a normal boot.
