I've an external running at higher res then the built in. Don't remember the resolution off top of my head sorry. Will update here tonight. The pitfalls I found were when I played with the mirroring option in prefs and the mirror friendly kext in NBI. Basically once I avoided any mirror I was fine.

And I run my mirrored image at 1024x600. Full resolution works just fine for mirroring. I have everything working, sound, bluetooth, happy wake from sleep, and even PowerStepping (processor idling or whatever it is called - to get that extra 30 min of battery power).
Alas, I could not get everything working as it should when I tried NBI ... just the nasty gray bars...
