Default VoodooPowerMini Kext help - 12-02-2009, 11:41 AM

I've installed the VoodooPowerMini Kext on both 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 and whenever I restart my 10v it won't boot up anymore, just stays at the grey screen.

I had it working before in 10.6.1 but I had to re-install snow leopard and now can't get it to work.

Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?

Some ideas:
Did you get the newest version of VoodooPowerMini?
Did you try to repair permissions after installimg?
Any other Kexts manually installed? I was having problems with the combination of OSXRestart.kext and VoodooPowerMini.kext...

If single user boot doesnt let you in, boot from your install disk. Take a look at your logs to see what errors your getting if any.

It certainly can work as it does for me.

The are different versions of VoodooPowerMini for Leopard vs Snow Leopard. Make sure you got the correct version and if you aren't sure download and install it again. Then if you install it in /Extra/Mini10Ext run Update Extra.app from /Extra. If you use Kext Helper and install it in System/Library/Extensions you also want to run Update Extra.app from /Extra. Do a repair permissions with Disk Utility before you reboot.

How can I disable VoodooPowerMini, once installed?

I'm guessing that you need to re-run NBI w/o VoodooPowerMini in place while fixing the extensions.

Turns out I was having slower than usual restarts and thought it might be due to CPU slowdown. I took some advice here and repaired permissions. All is back to normal so I'll keep the kext in place: CPU runs slower at times and cooler.

I believe I've installed the vpm kext correctly since in cpu-i it shows frequency jumps from 996 when idle to 1660mhz when active. However, I've read elsewhere that when the cpu is running really low, there should be a little whine emitting from the the mini. I've tried throttling at all different speeds via cpu-i, but hear no whine—which is a good thing. But, how can I verify throttling is actually working or doing anything? Thanks!

The whine is a result of the frequency change, current going through the traces of the circuit board, resonance in the case and other factors. It isn't that some component of the CPU directly starts to make a sound. As such the frequency will be different for every computer. So if there isn't any sound its not an indication of anything. Be happy your machine is quiet.

Am very happy it is quiet. Throttle does indeed seem to work; after using for a few a days I can tell battery life is definitely better. Thanks for your response.
