Mine's been hibernating pretty well ever since I built it last year. It does occasionally stop hibernating and stays in the silly 'sleep' mode when the lid's closed, as evidenced by the power led continuing to pulsate. I don't like this on a battery machine since I do not like the idea of depending on the ram staying alive all the time. It also doesn't work! Once it's hit this, it won't boot again when the lid is opened and needs a cold start during which usually a hibernate file problem message flashes up for a second. When it does this, I run 'smartsleep' which I downloaded from somewhere following a post somewhere here. I set it to 'sleep mode only' and let it run, so that the hibernate file is removed. Then I set it back to 'hibernate only' and let it run again. It's OK after that for months at a time. It's running Netbook 0.8.3 RC4 and I haven't seen any need to update beyond that.

For me sleep mode (when the lid is closed) works almost perfectly (just occasionally the sound may not come back when the lid is opened) - and I like it a lot! It is the way that real Macs work! The battery is sufficient to keep the RAM alive for very many hours.

It is the "disk hibernate" mode which won't work for most people!

I have hibernate working on a 10v with 10.6.5. It is a very fresh install and I know how to repeat it. I will post my details later tonight. Just thought you all might be excited to hear it.

---------- Post added at 06:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:47 PM ----------

This is what I did to make hibernate work on my Inspiron Mini 10v. In some cases I probably gave you some information that isn't relevant but I figured the more info the better with how few people have gotten this to work.

I ordered a stock 10v originally. I have upgraded it to 2gb of memory and replaced the hard drive with a 500gb (Samsung HM500JI) drive. I'm not sure it is relevant to mention but just in case ;-)

Mini 10v Bios Details (vA06):
Main Tab
Version: A06
CPU: Atom N270
Product: Inspiron 1011
CPU ID: 106C2
System Memory: 640 KB
Extended Memory: 2038 MB

Advanced Tab
Boot Time Diag: Disabled
Quickboot: Enabled
Speedstep: Enabled
On Board Lan: Enabled
WLAN Control: Enabled
Bluetooth: Disabled
USB Bios Legacy: Disabled
USB Wake: Disabled
Funciton Keys: Multimedia

Boot Tab:

Network

I applied a retail install of 10.6.3 to an 8GB USB stick.
I then used Meklorts NetbookBootMaker 0.8.4 RC1 on the USB stick
I went through the install using the USB stick. At the end it installs fine and reboots without the USB stick.
I entered all my credentials to create a login. I didn't do anything else at this point. Don't play with settings or anything.
I then installed the NetbookInstaller off of Meklorts site for 10.6.4 (Labeled 201006162351)
After that I allowed the software updates (10.6.5 as well) to install (These are the first updates applied after a fresh install). I installed all updates onto my newly installed 10.6.3 as of November 13th 2010.
When it rebooted I disabled bluetooth in bios before it booted into 10.6.5 (May not be relevant)
I downloaded deepsleep (http://bit.ly/9iHyiw) command line utility. I executed it (sudo ./deepsleep). It mentioned it didn't have a hibernate file.
I opened netbook installer from applications. I unchecked everything but I made sure to toggle enable hibernate and quiet boot.
I rebooted.
I re-executed deepsleep and it worked!!!

To make it sleep when you close the lid you have to do the following at a terminal:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 1

Note: You also have to make sure "Use Secure Virtual Memory" is unchecked in the security section of your system preferences in Mac OSX.

On the Mac in system preferences:
Under Energy Saver settings
(Automatically power on after power failure is not checked)

In Security
(Use secure virtual memory is NOT checked!)

This is awesome because I just got done trying to get it to work on 10.6.2, 10.5.8, 10.6.3. I had tried everything. I had pretty much given up. And then with very little effort it worked.

I'm scared to touch anything since it is finally working! This is not a very detailed guide but hopefully it helps someone.

Thanks metacove, this works well and I can finally close the lid without having to re-start.

Just want to say I did not change my setting;
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 1
instead I left it on hibernatemode 3
or at least that is what I think this command states
pmset -g | grep hibernatemode

I also have 10.6.5 on my Mini 10v

I followed only the steps below.

- I downloaded deepsleep (http://bit.ly/9iHyiw) command line utility.
- I set the system preferences as described by metacove
- I restarted the Mini 10v
- I opened netbook installer (0.8.4 RC1) from applications. I unchecked everything but I made sure to toggle enable hibernate and quiet boot.
- I restarted the Mini 10v
- I executed deepsleep (sudo ./deepsleep).

It worked.

Thanks again!

Yes! Another success story. My Mini 10v finally has everything working! I think the thing I've been missing is to disable secure virtual memory. Once that was off, hibernate started working. Thanks!!

BTW- this tool does a great job of controlling the sleep mode: SmartSleep

An alternative method for working hibernate on the 10V, does not work on the Mini9.

Go to System Preferences > Security & uncheck "Use secure virtual memory"

Reboot

Remove the Sleepimage

sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage

Enable sleep & deep sleep

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3

Close the lid & wait for it to sleep (it will take a little longer before the light starts to blink)

Unplug, remove the battery and then reinstall & power it back on.

Should bring you back to your desktop with the terminal window still open. Hibernate check complete

I can confirm this has just worked for me (see my signature below for machine specs). Just did a software upgrade to 10.6.6 from 10.6.4 (which worked flawlessly) then thought I'd just try these steps while I was at it. Now I finally have hibernation

Excellent. Thank you very much for these instructions.
