Question RC3 mini9 running *HOT* - no speedstep? - 10-21-2009, 03:46 PM

Hi all,

Anyone else have a mini9 that is running *HOT* even after hours of doing nothing? CPUi107 reports the CPU speed at 1596MHz all the time.

I also tried installing VoodooPowerMini which worked great on the 10.5 but doesn't seem make the 10.6 install run slower at idle.

I suspect that speedstep is not working and that my install is lucky to still work after installing the kexts above!

[Update]

After reinstalling the VoodooPowerMini kext 3 time it finally started working for no apparant reason. Now CPUi107 shows speedstep is working and my ball warmer is now cooling off!

is there an easy way to figure out if the installation worked? (beside the fact that it hopefully doesn't get as warm as before)

...yes! I found an application called cpu-x that will display the current multiplier and core speed in real time.

If it shows your speed stuck at 1596MHz then speed step is not working - if it jumps around when the machine calms down all is good.

netkas.org CPU-X:cpu-z like cpu detector for Mac OS X

Or CPU-i mentioned as a footnote here:

Just for yucks I downloaded cpu-x to see what was going on with my 10v Snow Leopard config (RC3 of NetbookInstaller) and it seems to be stuck at 1.6Ghz as well.

SpeedStep is not and has never been included in NetbookInstaller. This may be implemented in the future, but nothing is "wrong" with your NBI installation if you do not have SpeedStep (since it is not even included)

Is there any disadvantage to having VoodooPowerMini installed? As far as I can tell, it just makes my mini run cooler.
