Re: Kubuntu Install Help - 03-10-2009, 04:13 PM
Some of your questions may be answered at one of the two best guides and help manuals for Ubuntu / Kubuntu:
Kubuntu guide (kubuntuguide.org) at http://kubuntuguide.org
Ubuntu guide (ubuntuguide.org) at http://ubuntuguide.org
What I would do in your situation is to start with the Ubuntu Netbook Remix version, without anything extra. This installs the best set of drivers and a display optimised for the netbook. Ubuntu Netbook Remix installs fine on the Dell Mini. See http://www.ubuntumini.com/2008/10/ubunt ... ini-9.html.
Then add the Kubuntu desktop, if you really want it, by
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
(You have to be online to do this, of course.)
Kubuntu can run comfortably with as little as 384 Mb RAM, so a netbook with 1 Gb RAM should be able to run Kubuntu without a problem.
Many users prefer Ubuntu Netbook Remix by itself in preference to adding KDE (Kubuntu), however, because the KDE desktop is not ideal for the Netbook screen (neither is the Gnome desktop).
It is also easy enough to add the individual KDE/Kubuntu applications one by one to the Ubuntu Netbook Remix, without having to install the entire KDE desktop.

This will remove all of the Gnome applications and give you exactly the same system as if you'd done a fresh install of Kubuntu, except that it will also keep your documents in /home intact.
ps I am not 100% sure, but I don't think the netbook remix works in Kubuntu.
