Default No Sound on USB connected Kubuntu - 10-17-2008, 02:42 AM

Love my new Mini, but not terribly fond of Ubuntu. I like the Kubuntu interface better.

I plan to keep the Dell supported Ubuntu in place and will use it when traveling.

I have an external USB connected drive with Kubuntu on it. I can boot into it with the Mini just fine. It runs reasonably fast. The only problem is that I have no sound. (Sound works fine if native Ubuntu boots).

I even went so far as to completely uninstall and reinstall ALSA on Kubuntu. All volume controls are maxed. Nothing!

Any ideas? Is there a Mini specific sound driver that I need to install on Kubuntu?

Solved, thanks to this post ... -mini.html

I noticed that there was a section on getting sound working in Ubuntu, so it was likely it would work in Kubuntu

Step 4. Get sound working
In a terminal type:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

At the end of alsa-base file add:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell

Then rebooted and adjusted the volume in kmix.

So Now I'm back to Kubuntu booting from my external 160GB drive for my main use at home, and Ubuntu when I carry the
mini out with me.

Next challenge - a virtual windows environment.

I'm using ubuntu on a thumb drive. When I try this fix and reboot, the speaker icon is x'd out and double clicking it tells me "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found". What does this mean?
