Moblin 2 by Intel - 01-29-2009, 01:06 PM
News from Intel on their Moblin 2 distribution optimized for Netbooks and the Atom processor! You can view the official release notice here: http://moblin.org/community/blogs/tshur ... ha-release
Would be interesting to tinker around with a kernel being tweaked by the CPU manufacturer themselves If anyone gives this a go, post here! Supposedly has very good boot times.

No "supposedly" about it - It DOES boot fast. Take a look at the Phoronix.com video of boot time comparison.
I almost couldn't believe my eyes!

It's really fast. I think it will be interesting to boot from a pen drive when you need fast internet search.

I didn't have access to a linux box or dd for windows, so I just used Unetbootin. It was the latest Windows build, version 3.10 I think. I put it on a 2GB Kingston Data Traveler and it loads wicked fast. Though at the moment no wifi, but I have a thumbdrive with backups of bcm43/b43-fwcutter, and wl_apst.o. Tomorrow I'll try running that in Moblin 2 Live and see what happens. Maybe I'll be able to get wifi working .
One note on using the Unetbootin method. When you are booting off of the Thumbdrive you'll get a GUIish menu that has a few options. Choose the second one "Boot" and Moblin2live will load up, again wicked fast.
