bkero (another member of these forums) has posted a number of configuration files which help you tweak USE flags for the specific architecture of the Mini. Gentoo's installation has changed - I, too, am returning to the distro after not using it for several years. Choosing a "profile" is the only tricky bit to be added since last I booted an installer disk. Be sure to aim the symlink for the profile at a directory; not a file!
The Gentoo team have streamlined you down to "published instructions" for a stage 3 install. However, there's nothing stopping an enterprising person from digging deeper into the set up.
Happy New Year!

I am currently running Xubuntu 9.04 Jaunty on my Mini 9 and it runs like a dream. I dont see it hang anymore when loading videos or doing anything remotely processor intensive. There were a few things I had to do to get it how I liked, I first fixed the font size to something a bit more normal, in doing so it also helped with the screen size problem (sometimes popups will peak below the bottom bar of the screen so you cant see the bottom, but changing the font helped) then I got gsynaptics and did the 9.04 fix to get it working to disable touchpad clicking and scrolling because that gets very annoying. Then I got Compiz just to try it out, i tried it for ubuntu 8.04 and it wasnt as smooth as i had hoped however on Xubuntu 9.04 it works like a charm! Oh you also have to edit the compiz file to get it working, but its a pretty easy fix.. So once i did that (and fixed the sound by turning the speaker volume up) it works perfectly. It has great performance and I have been really impressed, I am a linux noob though so it took some time to get it to this but now i wont be changing it to anything else anytime soon! I recommend it 100%.
The only thing that doesnt work (any maybe someone has a fix out there!) is the function hotkeys for turning the volume up and down.. The screen brightness buttons work, but not the volume.
Oh and Suspend and Hibernate work very well, i can suspend it over and over again and not have a problem and there is also a setting for it going into suspend or hibernate when the lid is closed, which is great as well.
