Try Fedora LXDE desktop.
Can't guaranty it will work for you OOTB , but runs stable and fast on my modified Dell Mini 9 .
I upgraded mine with a RunCore SSD and Intel WiFi .
Fedora claims their "spin" is optimized for Intel Atom .

Why not Puppy Linux? If you do a frugal instal it only copies a couple of main files and a save file for your settings in the hard drive, inside, outside or without a Windows partition.
The best is that when you boot, the OS loads completely in RAM and speed is a bonus even on very old computers.
I even tested it on a Mitac 6133 with 466MHz(!) Pentium3 CPU, 160MB RAM(32 onboard+128) which opened a new page in it's (...long) life.
