I'd recommend using unetbootin to build a usb flash drive based installer with the ubuntu 8.10 iso, either use the standard desktop iso, or the lpia version, your choice. Then just do a normal install.
My A03 bios takes about 9 seconds until I see the grub menu counting down, then ubuntu takes about 39 seconds until I see the login screen... compiz and X take another 20 or 30 seconds to get all set up, but the effects and environment is worth it to me.
I did edit /etc/init.d/rc and change the concurrency parameter from none to shell, I think it shaved about 2 seconds off of the boot. I'm sure there are more gains possible, but I'm too lazy to look into it further.
