Default Moon OS ver 3 Makara - 09-25-2009, 11:20 PM

Last week a friend gave me a CD that contains Moon OS.
When I first booted the CD, I thought WOW! this has a lot of eye candy.
It is based on ubuntu 9.04 and uses Enlightenment for the desktop.
After some searching I found a good site for details of this OS
moonOS
moonOS What’s new in moonOS 3 Makara?
I'm certain the screen resolution fix for the mini 10 will work on this.
http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/dell...0-not-10v.html
I just haven't done it yet. (I'm currently downloading an iso of xbuntu)
Wifi with wpa and ethernet works out of the box on my mini 10
Notice in second screenshot, it only takes 2.61gb, other partition has xbuntu on it and is 2.20gb

Be advised the Poulsbo drivers may not like certain kernels even after installing the headers. DRM errors is the main reason getting them to run gives people a headache.

You're right. I installed the drivers and kernel sources to eliminate the DRM stuff, but the moon desktop dialogs started to just be blank.
I couldn't make any selections in these dialogs. Also the applications on the right of the screen got too big and some were off the screen.
Changing dpi settings helped very little.
I ended up booting into moon-recovery mode and selected "Fix Display Problems"
It booted fine and the desktop icons are back to their original size.
Dialog boxes behave normally now as well.
I checked my xorg, conf file. The recovery mode -> "fix display problems" removed all the settings I added when installing the poulsbo drivers.
I'm not sure what resolution I have now, but it looks good. I'll bet it's back to 1024x768, I need to take a screenshot and check its size.
The reason I cannot tell which resolution I'm looking at is because the "Screen Resolution" settings gives me the below error.
(This error was displayed before and after I did the resolution fix linked in my first post)
Code:
[No refresh rates found]
No refresh rates were reported by your X Display Server
If you are running a nested X Display Server, then
this is to be expected. However, if you are not, then
the current refresh rate will be used when setting
the resolution, which may cause damage to your screen.
The dialog is empty, and doesn't show any settings after I close that warning.
There is also 65mb of updates I need to install, according to the update manager.
I'll do that as soon as I'm finished downloading a xbuntu iso.

I wanted to get Moblin working, but it just doesn't want to boot for me.
When I tried moon OS for the first time, I decided I would try and make it work on my mini 10.
Moon has a lot of cool things already installed, and is "very tweakable".

Edit: I took a screenshot of my current settings and it is 1366x768.
I would post it here but forum limits to 1280x1024
Thanks for reading this,
Jon

Default Moon OS and poulsbo drivers - lockups - 09-26-2009, 07:19 PM

I've since removed moon os from my mini 10 and replaced it with xubuntu desktop xfce.
When scrolling a large document, my mini would freeze and I needed to hold the "off" button for 8 secs to get control back.
No response from keyboard, touchpad, or mouse.
This happened 3 times.
Upon rebooting moon os, the filesystem check would fsck the partition.
The first two times this happened, fsck completed and fixed the filesystem.
The third time this occurred, fsck errored out at 90% and suggested to manually fsck the partition in recovery mode.
I booted to recovery mode, but recovery mode wouldn't boot to the settings screen.
It also displayed errors, and suggested I fsck the partition manually.
Then it asked for a "root" password.
When I installed moon os, I never assigned a root password, so the above procedure had me locked out.
Since I couldn't fsck the partition manually, and moon wouldn't boot, I removed this operating system.
Also, I never could figure out why I couldn't use the "resolution settings" app in moon while I had it up and running.
I scoured the moon os forums, but there doesn't seem to be anyone using moon with a GMA500 graphics setup.
Maybe I'll try moon later on one of my desktops.
