Complex Q regarding OSX install on 8GB Mini9 - 06-27-2009, 01:03 AM
I followed the DellEFI guide, part G, and then A, Two USB method. Was going great. However, i discovered when i unchecked all the additional optional software i was an agonising 18mb short, and could not install.
I then tried to follow part H from this part of the guide: Old Guide | DellEFI | mechdrew
But my only other computer is windows so i could not find a way to alter the file, as the part H is a mac based guide. I could navigate the installers file system using TransMac and loctaed the 'OSInstall.mpkg' file. I managed the small sucess of being able to open the OSInstall.mpkg file with 7Zip achriving tool for windows, i could also open and edit the relative points but i guess due to some parameters in the file i could not save my changes.
Anyways after hours i am stuck.
Would someone with a mac be kind enough to do part H of the above guide for me? I could send them the 'OSInstall.mpkg' file (cant upload here due to file restrictions). I could give you a couple of $ or £ for your time..
Either that or point out another solution if you have one.

My 2 x 8GB USB pen drives were both 200MB+ above the size of the Stec SSD. And if you don't journal your file system, you even save more space. So I installed from the first USB pendrive to the second USB drive.
Then i used diskutil to create a compressed image of my installed USB drive and restore it on my STEC. The compressed image can fit on a 4GB USB drive or the network if you mount it correctly.
Diskutil pruned my file system even more and didn't require the extra restore space that time machine uses hence why I used diskutil.
End result was I had a default install on my STEC without deleting a single file.
Once on the STEC, I pruned the file system by removing large voices, unwanted backdrops, languages, 64-bit and some applications.
End result was a 4GB install. But this really did take some work to get it that small :-)
