Default slow video off SDHC card & Silverlight question (OSX 10.5.7) - 06-25-2009, 04:19 PM

I just installed a brand new copy of OSX on my mini 9 last night. It was actually quite painless thanks to the tutorials found here. I haven't gotten much time to play around yet but a couple of my first tests have come up short...

First I tried to play a couple movies off of my SD card. They were encoded using Handbrake into the default "XBOX 360" format. I like to use this format because I mainly use my 360 to stream movies from my Mac. The video was pretty choppy (it worked very well when I was running Ubuntu). A 720p HD video off my camera played well though, but it may have a lower bitrate or something. Is there a fix to this?

Also I tried to install Silverlight so that I could try Netflix instant videos. It wouldn't install because it thinks I have a Power PC. I found an older possible fix for this but the links were broken. Anybody have a current fix?

Thanks!

You might get a different result if the video was on your internal drive. I'd at least try it to isolate the problem.

It appears the Mini 9 doesn't meet the minimum requirements for Silverlight:
Microsoft Silverlight: Light Up the Web
so you might be out of luck. I think I might try it myself when I get home. Forgot to bring my Hackbook to work today.

Thanks. I'll have to try it off the internal drive and see how that goes. It kind of defeats the purpose of storing big files on an SD card though but at least it will potentially isolate the problem. Too bad I didn't bring mine to work either.

I think some people have been able to get silverlight to work. Maybe it was the older version of SL??? I'll have to look more into this.

Ive noticed that netflix and other video on my mac install are watchable, but dont run as smooth as my xp install. I was hoping to do mac only, but might have to dual boot as I use netflix alot

And I think my slow video problem is related to hard drive space. I only had about 1.2GB left. Files on my SD card larger than that were choppy. The smaller video files played well. I'm in the process of using Monolingual to strip off everything except English. I've already gained about 2GB. That should fix it. But I'm awfully low on HD space. I might have to upgrade.

Default How is your card formatted? - 06-27-2009, 05:15 PM

I had my 32GB card formatted as GUID Mac OS Extended Journaled and had your problems. I redid it with MBR FAT32, and the problems went away with video playback. I then left it at MBR and used Mac OS Extended (not journaled) and the video still plays back smoothly. I never bothered turning journaling back on as it isn't really needed for an SD card holding media files, so not sure if it was the journaling or the GUID table that causes the issues, but I would assume it was the GUID partition table.

Since the SD card isn't directly bootable anyway, not having GUID doesn't matter.

I actually get choppy video either off the SD card (regardless of format) or when I transfer the video to the hard drive. Using Activity Monitor I can see that I still have 20% processor and over a gig of RAM when playing these files, but the SSD is maxed out. I was planning to upgrade to a Super Talent or Runcore anyway. Would this most likely be the fix?

Problem resolved by using VLC instead of Quicktime. Works for me.
