The default driver eliminates 99% of the artifacts (I occasionally get an artifact in System Preferences, but not too often) but does not allow for video mirroring, hence the Terminal "mirroring off" command. The second driver is enabled by selecting the "Install old mirror friendly GMA kext" option in DellEFI, which is a driver that is compatible with mirroring but has a lot of artifacts.
