I moved this thread. Might as well be in the standard OS X section, since you guys seem to be doing this now.
We do need a disclaimer on this.. While it's possible to install, and everything seems to work, Quartz Extreme and Core Image do not. This means that many apps will not display properly, most video won't display properly, etc.. It's a huge thing to give up, but I suppose it's better than the alternative OS's.

Although this is possible, it is definitely not the best option (IMO).

My understanding was that everyone already knew that the Mini 12 would work fine with OSX if it did not have the GMA500... so it makes sense that Quartz Extreme and Core Image do not function properly.

I would rather have a more functional OS, because it would get quite annoying having display issues and apps that do not work properly because of this. Graphics functionality is pretty important to have and something I would not be willing to sacrifice. It would turn out to be a major annoyance

the gma500 plus the easily replaceable hard drive is exactly why i got an asus 1000he versus its "replacement" the 1005HA-P. I am not jumping at the bit to install osx just yet because of the gaming implications, but it is nice to know that these gma500 problems dont completely bar someone from running OSX anymore, it opens up many more options.

Although, dont forget when you get so mad that the gma500 and any other graphics options dont work, that the reason the gma 950 worked so effing well is because thats what all the macbooks without discrete graphics cards used to have last generation. You can still even buy a new mac mini (at a cheaper price) that has the old, standard gma950 as its graphics card, or spend more money to get the apple-wide new nvidia 9400m graphics.

So of course you get the best, qe/ci graphics with a gma 950 and also any new ion platform will likely be similar since it uses 9400m. This is also the reason why nvidia cards work so much more reliably in desktop hackintosh setups compared to ati, because apple sells nvidia cards.

The really funny thing is i think even in windows the gma500 is no great improvement (flash video anyone?) over the 950 so why in the hell do they insist on using them in the later or "premium" models?!?

The GMA500 is actually, on a hardware level, superior. It has more pixel shaders or something...

The problem is that the graphics processor wasn't made my Intel, but instead by Imagination Technologies and uses a PowerVR core, which is nothing like the 8xx/945/950 series. So everyone has to make a new graphics driver from scratch for a new type of core, for a computer that will never see more then lightweight word processing use. There's not a huge incentive to make it run amazingly well...

On a happier note, I just got a retail copy of Leopard today, and I'll take to installing it soon as I can get some spare time and an 8gb USB drive, I'll stop by again and let everyone know how it works.

Everything works including the wifi, but I have to boot off of my 16 gb flash drive everytime. If you guys have time as well, you should try installing osx. I just followed what they did on the link to the vaio p forum and than installed some of the dell mini 9 kexts and others i searched google for.

What I did was install osx onto a 16gb usb drive than booted off from that. After that I installed Chamelean than put the kexts in.
slowmotionzx, can you advise what BIOS version you are runnning at? I managed to install SL to DELL mini 12 but can only get the resolution set to 1024x768. It looks like a VBIOS problem. Thanks for any feedback.

Exclamation Problem with Mini 12 - 09-25-2011, 06:24 PM

Hello,

I know that this is an old post but I decided to install in my Mini 12 the OSX 10.6.7 and I have studied and practiced as much I could the last week.

I have tried with netbookbootmaker, chameleon and lastly with myhack which automates many procedures. But all of these haven't lead me to my desired target

I believe that the whole problem lies to the kext files and I tried to copy/paste the following 3 kext files to the extensions folder of usb just as I have read:

VAIOPEnabler.kext AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext and RealtekR1000.kext

This is my procedure:
1. I create a bootable USB stick from OSX 10.6.7 using the disk utilities of Macintosh .
2. I use a method to create a correct bootable USB stick with the kext files (using one of the three above methods) and I copy the 3 kext files to the correct, I believe, folder.
3. I modify the BIOS (disable or enable bluetooth, USB Bios Legacy Support enabled, USB wake support disabed) and I boot from the USB.
4. Now for the last part usually I find my laptop showing the Apple logo without moving anything for a long long time...

I would be grateful if someone can guide me out of this.

Thank you very much,
Patrick

Any news from anyone?

Edit: I understand that this is an old thread and an old dell mini which is "retired" but I do not want to sell it...
