Default Audio Static? - 06-18-2009, 10:16 AM

I just installed OSX a few days ago, and its been running flawlessy up until today.

it seems that upon restart, there is a static sound coming from the mini 9. I
m sure its from the speakers, because when i turn mute on, the sound dissapears, and when I turn it back up, I can hear the static again, kind of like radio interference.

Anyone have an idea what this could be?

i see the audio noise sticky is gone.

what you have is well known - a very few mini's have this problem, like mine

put it in suspend and it will go away until you reboot.

i only reboot occasionally. when i do i immediately put it in and out of suspend. problem solved.

sorry i should have said 'sleep'. there are three simple ways:
1) apple menu -> sleep
2) power button -> sleep
3) close lid

for all of these methods wait until the power LED starts to blink slowly (you are then in sleep mode). then push the power button once to return to normal. the static sound should be gone until you reboot.

I tried the suspend method but it didnt work. What did work for me was opening system preferences > Sound. With the sound prefeerences pain open all static goes away. when I click show all at the top to go back to the main menu all the static starts again.

I also have the exact same sound problem with my Mini 9. It's never happened running Win XP SP3 that came with the Mini, nor Ubuntu Linux (9.04), so it only happens with OS X. It's not always constant, but happens a lot of the time.

My Mini 9 specs: OS X 10.5.7 (retail DVD), BIOS is A04, DellEFI 1.2a5, 2GB RAM, RunCore 16GB SSD.

Also, the audio volume on mine is quite loud even on the lowest volume setting, maybe this static issue is because the audio is fixed too high? I used my iPod the other day after the volume was set at maximum (after using it with video on my TV) and I was getting a similar hissing/crackle/static noise (while it was silent and not playing anything) until I turned the volume down.

As SkyWriter implied, this is a known and well-documented problem. There are two schools of thought on the source of the problem but SkyWriter has the best solution on the forum.

This isn't a solution, it is masking the symptoms. What are the theories about the cause. Has anyone fixed it permanently by going to the root of the problem?

the 'solution' is to get one of these 'broken' mini's into the hands of someone that can 'fix' it.

clearly some bit of audio hardware programming software runs as part of the suspend process that doesn't run as part of a boot. and furthermore undoes the proper initialization when restart runs. it's only a matter trial and error - IF you have a mini that does it.

however as stated in the latter days of mini development it's so infrequent that the developers can't get it to happen it was deemed no important to fix. especially since just doing a suspend after restart/boot was a simple work around.

if this doesn't work for you, perhaps you really have broken hardware. i still run DellEFI if that's any help.

need any more research? read every post on the problem like i have.

i would prefer external monitor/projectors were as easily addressed.
