Failing that, all I can think is to try downloading the update manually, some have had success with that for OS updates.
You need to be sure you have update 2 working first:
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2
Then you can download update 3:
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 3
Update 1 was for 64-bit only, so this should be enough.

My original install was with DellEFI 1.1 and when I say it failed, I meant that it never finished. I got hung up with 99% and 1 minute remaining for like 2 hours. I finally rebooted and it did work but I could never get the java patch to work.
So with my reinstall, everything is fine. Even the java update worked through software update so now all is good. And the single USB drive install for DellEFI 1.2a.XXX makes it ALMOST painless. Well, except for the 2 hour time commitment
