Default OSX on 10v problems so far - 06-15-2009, 03:35 PM

After reading about the great compatibility of the Mini9, and hearing that the 10v was the same with a bigger screen, I went for it and placed an order.
A tiny Mac for travelling and occasional use sounded great.

I followed the DellEFI method and got it all working, with a couple of quirks I will note:
a) You have to name the formatted Mini hard drive/SSD as described in the docs (OSX9MINI I think). Otherwise the post install scripts fail.
b) I made the OSX partition only 80Gb, leaving another 30Gb for a later Windows install so I can dual boot.
c) The machine hung at a couple of points during the install, requiring a restart.

OK, so now I have OSX running on the 10v, and it should be perfect. But it's not. Here's a short list:

1) No audio, in or out. I tried applying the kernel extensions shown on a long thread in this site, but no joy.
2) Wireless works, but is slow. I am getting 2Mb down on the Mini, compared to 5Mb down on a Macbook Pro. Upload speeds are the same.
3) Skype completely fails. Starts, crashes, starts, crashes.
4) iChat works and sees the webcam, but there's no audio (as mentioned above).

Basically I've concluded that it's a fun experiment, but there's a reason that Apple charges for the integration of hardware and software - it just works, and this stuff doesn't completely work. That's OK if it's just a hobby PC, but you can't rely on it for daily use.

Any comments on issues 1-3 above would be appreciated. I'll keep reading and post a solution if/when I find one.

Dumb question, but which post install scripts are we talking about?

I'm hoping someone else is taking a look at number one. That's a little beyond me. As far as number two, I haven't noticed any issues with speeds. I'm doing the 1510 card, and speeds seem to be where they should be. Then again, I don't generally do anything network intensive from a LAN standpoint, but rather from a WAN stanpdoint.

The reason stuff just works is that Apple controls the hardware that's in use. The reason the Mini 9 works so well is that it is very close from a hardware perspective to the hardware that actually is used by Apple. Because they only support a fairly narrow scope of chipsets, their code is consequently more streamlined and optimized (especially as we'll see with Snow Leopard) and will work, because it's an Apple OS on Apple hardware.

The reason the 10v has issues? It's not Apple designe hardware. Therefore drivers aren't completely built in. There's a reason they are called Hackintoshes.

I use OS X on a daily basis, and I have no issues with it whatsoever. And I use it both professionally and as a hobby. Not to be rude or harsh, but to say that you can't rely on it for daily use is assinine. Certain things not working are annoying, but that's the joys of running an OS on hardware that the OS wasn't designed to support.

Want Microsoft's OSes to be as stable as Apple OSes? Then Microsoft needs to do the same thing. I can almost guarantee you that you'd have as few issues.

I'm hoping someone with greater skills than I can figure out a solution to this. What I am curious to know is if the audio drivers that are used on the NC10 have the same issues.

Network continues to be slow. Got sound working but it has two mics now, neither work. May need to reinstall in order to do multiboot.
Skype now works fine, odd.

My guess would be that Skype requires a valid sound device and crashes if it doesn't find one. So when you got a working (at least partially) driver for you sound hardware Skype magically started working.

Sound issues most of the time has to do with Legacy USB Support being enabled. Disable it in bios.

I have no problems with 10v install of SL and NBI0.8.3.

I think my 10v SL is more stable than my Windows XP/7 laptops.

+1

Thanks to the excellent job by members of this board, I've not had any problems with sound on my 10v. After installing, I ran NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 again. Have you tried that in addition to disabling Legacy USB? Keep after it, you're about there!
