I was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to change the user name in os x?

In short, no it's not possible.

You can search around for the reasons for this easily using google. I just thought I would give you a simple answer.

One way you could accomplish the same thing would be to make a completely new user and copy your files and settings to that account, then delete the old one.

Just so you know, I followed the Apple article enderg is referencing on my wife's Macbook and it worked just fine. It is very important to make a backup of your data though. If you miss a step or overlook something, things could go bad.
