When i try this method I get "not enough space to restore hit any key to boot normally" whenever trying to restore from "safe sleep"
Any ideas? i've tried the sequence several times to make sure i'm not missing any steps.

Sorry, I missed a portion of the puzzle. I updated the how-to with fixed instructions, you should just be able to download the attached zip file, and just do the sudo cp boot / step from the zip file.

Just to check, does using the latest Chameleon bootloader with fixes in the linked thread above, work properly and enable hibernation on a mini9 with 10.5.8?

Just use the modified DellEFI found here: Fool Proof No Hassle Mini 10v Install EVERYTHING WORKS!!
It will install the latest bootloader without any issues for you.
And yes, if you use my guide mentioned above you can get everything working in 10.5.8...on a mini 10v at least, can't say anything about a mini 9 though.
