Default Snow Leopard priced at $29 - 06-08-2009, 06:26 PM

So there's still no confirmation that it will work, but Apple just announced that Snow Leopard will cost $29 for a single license and $49 for a family pack. How's that for competitive pricing? Too bad they don't want other manufacturers to use it, Dell has already said they would like to be able to use Mac OS on their computer line and now, it's just dirt cheap. Hopefully this will cut down how many people complain about "try before buying."

$29 for the upgrade for current Leopard users is what I'm reading everywhere.

Okay, just double-checked, you guys are right. But still, now I don't feel so pinched in the pocket for an upgrade if it is possible/reasonable to do so.

The $29 version is only for Leopard users. The only way to get a non-upgrade version is to buy the Mac Box Set. Of course it's nice to have iLife and iWork but this could be a problem to those of us whose computers don't come with Leopard pre-installed. They seem to be taking the Microsoft approach of selling a cheap upgrade version. But unless the disc only contains what's been changed, I'm sure with a little hacking we can get around it.

I think that the best bet for the Hackintosh scene is the purchase of the full version Boxed Set (either single $169 or family pack $200). Then you get a full install, not a partial one that relies on already having Leopard installed. The corollary on that is the wait-and-see approach to see what others do. I could use an upgrade to iLife09, so a Family Pack Box Set is probably a pretty good deal for me.

I wonder how the update will be installed. Will it perhaps be an 'install over the top of Leopard' type situation? Fingers crossed it will be be possible to create a standalone installation disc using some kind of 'slipstreaming' process.

Cheers,
James

Here it sounds like we get a disc for upgrading leopard.

When I heard the keynote I thought the 29 dollars was for us who have bought leopard. So we get a install Snowleopard disc cheaper beceause we have leopard not that we need to install leopard to be able to install snowleopard. That would just be stupid, needing 2 different OS install discs to install 1 OS.

i was worrying about having to buy Snow Leopard when i first installed Leopard a few months ago. I'm so relieved that it only costs $29 to upgrade. If it turns out that it works on the mini, i will most definitely upgrade.
