Default DSLR Tethering? - 06-06-2009, 12:26 AM

Hi everyone,

This forum has been an invaluable resource for setting up my new DM9 with OS X yesterday. Everything went off without a hitch!

One thing that I was hoping to be able to use my mini for was tethering to my DSLR. More specifically, I want to be able to use the mini to trigger my camera shutter and make time lapse videos. I've got a Canon EOS Rebel XTI/400D.

I figured I would just be able to use the EOS Utility, but when I try to install I get a "screen resolution insufficient" warning and the install is forced to quit. I tried messing with the scale resolution tricks but that didn't help. I'm wondering if there's a file within the installer that is checking the resolution that I could just delete, similar to the silverlight trick? But if so, I don't know it.

So I guess I'm just wondering if any of you are using your mini as a shutter release, tethered to a camera, in OS X. And if so, what program(s) are you using and how are you setting things up? Thanks in advance.

-Jon

There probably is but I have no idea what it would be. I've played around with EOS Utility on my desktop Mac & Canon camera. It would probably be more useful installed on a Dell Mac mini 9.

Hopefully someone knows the answer to this one!

I got around this problem whilst installing photoshop by just plugging in an external monitor for the install.

Hope that works for you, photoshop runs fine on the internal monitor once installed btw.

I was having the same problem, I just copied the 'EOS Utility' folder/app from my macbook app folder to the one on the mini9.
Works great!

So you guys have been able to tether the camera then? Can anyone give us a step by step process? Thanks!

Good suggestions, you guys. I don't have access to an external monitor at the moment, so I tried out Valentinvdb's suggestion. I copied over the folder/app as well as the .plist file in ~/Library/Preferences/, but it doesn't seem to be working correctly. When I double click to open the EOS Utility app, it does the quick animation like it's opening, but it doesn't, and doesn't show up in the dock or anything. Should I not have copied the plist? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

I didn't copy the plist, and it works exactly as it does on my macbook: I'm able to change settings, take pictures, have them transfered directly to the mini, etc. (Rebel XSi aka EOS450D here, with the usb cable)
You should try to uninstall the eos utility with an app like appzapper or else (to remove any settings), and then copy only the app folder from another mac to your mini.

Step by step:
install the EOS utility on a regular mac
copy the EOS Utility app folder (not the plist) to your applications folder on the mini
lunch the EOS Utility on the mini
enjoy

Default It's working! - 06-06-2009, 09:50 PM

Never mind my previous reply... It's working!

Turns out when I first tried to copy over the EOS Utility app, I did it through my Dropbox account and for some reason this didn't work. I tried it again with a USB drive and now everything's working perfectly. Here's a crappy test image:

Default Process - 06-07-2009, 12:53 AM

Process was...

Copied the EOS Utility as stated above...
Opened EOS Utility on the mini
Plugged in my XTi and turned it on
Clicked on "Camera settings/Remote shooting" in EOS Utility
Used it to take pictures with the XTi.

Really the only thing different from using it on a "normal" mac was that I had to copy the program over rather than installing it on the mini. Other than this, EOS Utility works just the same as it ever did.
