Default Battery only lasts 2 hours, why? - 06-04-2009, 10:24 PM

Seeing others that say 3+ hours easy, but under 10.5.7 I am only getting 2 hours reliably., 1:58 actually. This is with Wifi off, just watching movies in iTunes.

Used EFI 1.2.5a.

To clarify the meter says 1:58 and that has been accurate in reality.

I have let it run down and recharge a couple of times, but this seems to be it.

Am I missing something? Not usually an issue around the house, but a pain for travel.

Can I go back to 1.1 will that make a difference?

not sure whether you are saying that after 10.5.7 upgrade, your battery life came down. try draining the battery completely and full recharge

I can't say for sure that it was the upgrade that caused, but I'm expecting a better battery life than 2 hours.

I have let it run down and then re-charge. No difference.

About how many times have you charged the battery? Because batteries usually only have a life of around 250 cycles, and after time the life of those cycles slowly grows shorter. Also, bluetooth can be quite a power hog if it's turned on. I can't say how 1.2alpha5 affects battery life, I'm waiting for at least the beta to test, but under 1.1 I've gotten close to 3 hrs myself.

You know I've experienced the exact same thing with my mini 9 after upgrading to 10.5.7 from 10.5.6. I have tried all sorts of stuff including using dellefi1.2a5, remove custom dsdt, i have completely killed the battery and completely charged it several times and it really is only lasting under 2 hours. With 10.5.6 I was getting just shy of three hours (watching movies and wifi'ing, no less).

It's interesting to see someone else experiencing the same thing...

What does it show in the battery meter after full recharge - 2 hours? or a bigger number close to 4 hours, but battery comes only for 2 hours or so?

li-ion batteries do not benefit from running down and then fully charging... they do not retain a "memory" like older batteries did.
doing so may actually decrease the life of a li-ion battery.
you can calibrate the software meter every 30 charge cycles or so by running the battery down to auto shutoff then charging to full charge. this only calibrates the meter however and may ultimately affect the lifespan of the battery.
there is no concern in recharging the battery from any state. try not to let it get below 20% if you can help it.
for long tern storage, it is better to store on a halfcharge than a full charge.

My Dell mini gets 3 hours under 10.5.7, the same as 10.5.6.

I upgraded a friend's mini 9 to 10.5.7 & it showed 4:45. Hers has the original STEC 16GB SSD & I have a RunCore. I wonder if the drive itself could have anything to do with battery life?

Frustrating problem. 89% 1:46 remaining as I type this.

This is what we get for unsupported h/w + s/w combos. While I have enjoyed this project, I'm not sure I will be keeping this setup long term. Not that the battery is the deal breaker, it is just one more in a line of concerns.
