Default iLife,iWork on Dell Mini 10v? - 05-31-2009, 10:18 PM

I'm planning to buy a Dell Mini 10v and put OSX Leopard on it. I'm going to buy the retail Mac Box Set with OSX, iLife09, and iWork09. Can the Dell run iLife and iWork? Thanks!

Get a Dell Mini 9, you can install all of these. As of now, getting OSX on Mini 10 itself will be difficult.

Actually, you're only partially right. Mini 10, no - OS X will not install on these. Now, the Mini 10v, yes, you can. Several here already have. Since the Mini 9's have been discontinued, your best bet is to go with a 10v - although if you do manage to get a Mini 9 from whatever source, you WILL be able to run OSX and iLife / iWork as well.

iLife and iWork WILL run on a 10v running OS X. Count on it.

However, with the even lower vertical resolution of the 10v (vs the already slim Mini 9), running some of the "taller" iLife suites may be challenging.

isn't there some sort of virtual resolution thing they used for the mini 9? could it work with the mini 10v?

also will all software made for mac run on the 10v? it should right?

Yes, if its just a matter of seeing the whole unresizable window from whatever program then the virtual screensize programs mentioned in the FAQ area will work be it Mini 9 or 10v. But some programs actually check the screen resolution and won't run if the size isn't at least 1024x768 (or whatever) and for these the virtual resolution fix won't help.

For example, if you were to set the virtual resolution to 50%, the screen would behave as if it were 2048x1200 but would still be a resolution of 1024x600. So iSale wouldn't run (it checks res) but you could see the entire photobooth window (it doesn't check but won't resize to smaller than 1024x768).

The new 10 has an option for a higher res screen, so it can run all of the apps, even those that are too tall for the 9's screen.

As for iWork, it works fabulously, especially the fullscreen mode of Pages, that looks really sharp on that tiny display. Plus, the built in dictionary is a godsend. I also recommend using Writeroom for fullscreen text editing, and Textexpander for inputting strings of texts by means of abbreviations.

iLife, well, everything should work, iTunes and iPhoto sure do, not sure about Garageband or iMovie. Then again, if you have a 9, you probably don't have a lot of disk space so it might be a good idea not to dabble with those programs. Garageband especially adds several Gb's worth of loops and other files to your hdd, you may not even be able to finish the installation because of it (I have 5 Gb free at this moment).
