Unhappy problem completing the xar of OSInstall.mpkg - 05-26-2009, 02:36 AM

OK. New Dell Mini 9, USB method planned. Retail Leopard 10.5.0 imaged to 16 Gb USB stick.

I ran into the following problem:

1) while completing the Advanced 3: Customizing the installer @
Guide Advanced 3 | DellEFI | mechdrew , I got all the way up to the point where I was recompressing the .mpkg file using the xar -c -f command as instructed.

2) the command seemed to hang and did not complete even after 20 minutes or so. Activity monitor had xar using alot of CPU and terminal did not respond with a prompt. I attempted this step several times.

My question is thus.... How long should the xar recompress process take? As I have a 16 Gb SSD in the Dell, can I uninstall these options later if I can't successfully modify the .mpkg ?

thanks. under a bit of a time crunch and figured I'd PM mechdrew and post my query here.

I have exactly the same problem. My terminal freezes when trying to rebuild the osinstall.mpkg file. I have tryed it in 2 different computers with the same result.

Can anybody help us??

Otherwise, can anybody create and upload an osinstall.mpkg file for 10.5.6 with the MBR and the aditional installation options enabled?

Thanks.

If you have 16 gig usb stick just use the Dellelfi usb method ( non custom install).

I don't have any 16gb usb stick, just a 8gb sd card. My ssd hard drive is also 8gb, that's why I need that modified osintall.mpkg file, to fit the installation easily on my ssd.

Fellow forum member mostro sent this to my e-mail the other day, but I haven't been able to confirm it:

After setting the values in the file to 'true', Step 6 is:

xar -c -f OSInstall.mpkg *

It has trouble with this command. It just sits there with a blinking cursor, indefinitely after entering it. If I remove the asterisk at the end, it complains "No file to operate on." But with the star, it sits forever and never finishes. If I delete the OSInstall.mpkg file and run that command, it will recreate it as a 0k file and never does anything to it.

I assume, you meant to have this be in a separate folder at the root of the HD, not right at the root of the HD, and so the * would include everything in that dir. So I just did this instead:

xar -c -f OSInstall.mpkg Distribution Resources/

and that worked, it created the file with 860KB (compared to the original at 804KB), so I figure it worked. Going to go try the install and will let you know if it works.
