Default EFIs and Multiple Hard Drives? - 05-23-2009, 06:21 AM

Ok, stupid question time:

- Does the Dell EFI actually alter the bios? Or is it just software residing on a boot area of the drive?

The reason I ask is because I'm considering buying two hard drives, one for OSX, and another for Windows (7 or XP). Depending on my OS needs, I'd crack open the case bottom and connect the appropriate drive.

Would this idea work?

Or does the Hackintosh process completely alter the Dell's Bios, making my idea unworkable? In other words, once I've gone through the Hackintosh process, can I get back to Windows just by swapping out the hard drive?

Many thanks for your help!

The DellEFI resides on a hidden partition on the disk drive (be it solid state or conventional drive). The computer's BIOS is not altered.

Right now I'm cloning the RunCore drive in my Dell mini to an external USB disk drive using Carbon Copy Cloner. I'm wondering if the EFI partition gets copied along with everything else & the drive is bootable or if I'll have to run DellEFI from a USB boot drive. We shall see.

Dell mini 9, 2GB RAM, 32GB RunCore SSD, OS X (10.6.7)

The DellEFI does not get copied, you will have to re-run it from your usb drive.

Ok, so I'm kinda new at this, so please bear with me.

If the Dell EFI is on the disk drive, and if I had one drive with OSX on it (already optimized for the Mini 9), and one drive with the original Windows XP on it, then I could change the OS instantly by simply installing the new drive in my Mini, correct?

I wouldn't need to do any other preparations, would I?
