Question Questions about Vodafone 5530 connection/charges - 05-22-2009, 08:04 AM

Morning,

I have managed to get OS X up and running thanks to the direct Runcore install guide and have the 3G 5530 modem connecting to Vodafone but my question is how does the script know where to connect and and what login details is it using? Or does the sim/modem firmware contain extra info?
I can see dial-up numbers in the script but no username/password - I want to check I am connecting in the right way to avoid charges. I have a Vodafone mobile broadband contract purchased with the Mini 9 by the way.

Thanks,

David

How are you connecting now? The modem/network should only allow you to connect to the service linked with your SIM card, even with the default settings.

If you go to System Preferences... > Network and click on the 5530 modem entry on the left column, you should see the telephone number, account name and password on the right side.

I assume you are in the UK, where contract account settings should be: (for other countries, see this PDF)
Telephone Number: internet
Account Name: web
Password: web
Also, check 'Show modem status in the menu bar', so you can connect using the phone icon in the menubar at the top of the screen.

If you sign up for an online account at Vodafone.co.uk you should be able to monitor usage of your data allowance - you might need to plug the SIM card into your mobile phone to find out the number associated with it and receive the account confirmation text message they send when you sign up.

Thanks for that info. I have now manually specified the APN, username & password and it connects correctly to Vodafone.

I don't appear to have a first bill yet from Vodafone so can't view my usage Will just try to keep an eye on when I use it.

Thanks,

David

Here's an app that can track usage: SurplusMeter. It has lots of options to match your billing cycle, and it's free! -- tutorial/review here
