That's a new twist. I too have 10.5.6 and installed from that. So, is this what I should do?

1) Download DellEFI 1.2a5
3) Install DellEFT with custom install as in Step 8
4) Install 10.5.7 update via OS X Software update tool
5) Restart in OS X Safe Mode
6) Run DellEFI 1.2a5 custom install again as in step 10
7) Restart

I would like to have the multi-touch working. Is there a conflict between DellEfi 1.2?

I have followed the first part of the tutorial "Prep Work (On Mac)". Everything has worked fine. However, when I plug the USB drive into my USB port and try to boot to it, I get an error that says "Operating System not found". What am I doing wrong?

Default Some Questions - 05-19-2009, 01:53 PM

Excuse my very extreme novice-ness...... Followed the May 09 instructions (fantastic work, I might add) with USB 16 GB. (I had Ubuntu on Mini9 from Dell) Seemed to go well, got OSX up and running but at step to do 10.5.7 Combo updater, could not mount USB again (it will mount on my Mac PB). Copied Combo via WiFi from laptop on ad hoc network but could not mount dmg file at all on Mini9 in OSX (error msg with both dbl-clk and with Disk Utility). Tried Software Updater (hoping pkgs would work) and it went through, but at reboot, tried safe mode and all I get is a persistent loooooong view of the grey Apple logo and nothing happens.
Any help is much appreciated. Keep up the good work!
[DellEFI1.2a5, early Leopard install disk]

UPDATE: Did as mechdrew suggested (copied Combo pkg, not dmg + USB drive inserted prior to boot), and am up and running OSX on my Mini9. Awesome! Thanks!

Hey, having the same USB mounting issue as above. I rebooted with the usb drive in and it seems to recognize it. The next failure is that the 10.5.7 dmg does not mount either so I had to take just the .pkg out of the dmg on another computer and transfer that over... Weird. I'm now on the combo update step of the installation, ill let everyone know how it goes.

This is the common solution to this problem, tends to happen when a disc older than 10.5.6 is used. It's not new to 10.5.7.

Just so everyone is clear on this, make sure to extract the package file to the USB drive on another Mac and insert the USB drive before booting up. That fixes it for most people.

Well, I'm writing this from a fully working 10.5.7 mini9 so as you can guess, it all worked after the USB mount hiccup, thanks to Mechdrew's amazing tut.

Yes Once Dellefi is installed I cancel reboot and can play with the OS without any problem. The only thing is that I can not mount any dmg image especially the combo.
Then I reboot and can not restart at all, always have the crash screen.
I've tried to reboot with -x -f without any modification

My install retail DVD is 10.5.0

Okay, so I think I may have already solved the problem with the other posts on this thread. You need to mount the DMG on another Mac, and extract the Package file from that, put it on a USB drive, and then run it on the Mini. Be sure to have the USB drive that contains the update plugged in before the Mini turns on.

The technical reason for this is that DellEFI (or its predecessor, Type11) has never actually been compatible with anything less than 10.5.6, so the little bit that actually gets you Mac running only does that: get it running. The drivers are not fully compatible until an update to 10.5.6 or later (in our case, later) is performed. The conflict causes a few issues, including the glitch with Disk Utility and a lack of plug-and-play operation on the USB ports. This conflict usually results in the ironic incapability to upgrade. A catch-22, if you will. We bypass this by opening the DMG on a fully-functional Mac, copying from the disk image to a real (USB) disk, and then plugging it in before the drivers load so as to bypass the glitch altogether.

Needless to say, looks like I've got another item to update in the guide. This is going to be fun...
