Default Connect to TV - 05-16-2009, 12:40 AM

There's a similar thread in the general section but I think they're using Windows. I tried connecting the Mini 9 to my 26" Samsung LCD TV with a VGA-VGA cable. At first the TV displayed a "mode not supported" message. On the second try the System Preferences Display window appeared on the TV listing several resolutions. The highest res was automatically selected (1368? x something). Problem was I couldn't do anything with mouse or keyboard on the TV...the mouse and keyboard were still functioning on the Mini display. Then I made the mistake of selecting "mirror displays" and both displays just went awry. Now, every time I plug in the VGA cable it automatically tries to mirror the displays and both screens go terribly wrong. Any thoughts?

Default Connect to LCD TV - 05-16-2009, 01:07 AM

The same thing happened to me. There is no way to uncheck the Mirriored box because that option doesn't appear.
Anyone PLEASE HELP!

Before you connect the cable, open Terminal and type
Code:
mirroring off
but don't press enter yet. Connect the cable, and once the screen goes wonky you press enter. Either that, or you use the option in DellEFI to install the old graphics driver that allows mirroring.

The "mirroring off" fixed the wonky display (thanks!). Now I'm stuck with the Display settings window being the only thing shown on the TV. Not sure what to do from here. There's no mouse, no dock...if I open a program like Safari on the Mini nothing happens on the TV. Maybe the old driver is the only option? I don't know anything about old vs. new driver...like what I'll lose by installing the old one.

You should be able to drag the app window from one screen to another. But in any case, the reason there are two different drivers is because the new one (which is installed by default) gets rid of the artifacts (little glitches on the screen that are hard to get rid of, but don't necessarily affect usability) but breaks mirroring. You shouldn't notice too much of a difference by installing the old driver, it's more of a matter of preference, really.

I am trying to connect to an external monitor or projector. In another thread, the suggestion to remove the ByHost folder and the com.apple.systempreferences.plst file from the user>Library>Preferences folder was made and I tried that. It worked about half the time. I had DellEFI 1.2.alpha5 installed until I read MechDrew suggest
"use the option in DellEFI to install the old graphics driver that allows mirroring."
So I installed DellEFI 1.1 using a default install. The external monitor worked the first two or three times, but now the Mini just freezes when I plug the monitor in.
Any help is appreciated.
