Default Netflix DRM Issue - 05-15-2009, 09:37 PM

For the past week or so I have been getting error code 8152 (a Silverlight error) on my Dell Mini 9 when trying to stream Netflix movies...basically saying that I can't view anything with DRM in it. I've had my netbook for 2 or 3 weeks now, installed 10.5.6 right off the bat, and Netflix was working previously - now it doesn't work in Boxee, Safari, or Firefox.

I can't pinpoint exactly when it stopped working or if it was related to some update I made, but it must have been. I did a software update a week or two ago (pre-10.5.7), so I guess maybe something there could have caused it.

I didn't see any relevant threads on this forum, but other people with hackintoshes are definitely experiencing similar issues - Netflix 8152 error (hackint0sh's) - boxee :: forum

I'm new to Mac OS in general so it is all a bit beyond me, but I did follow the instructions in that thread - downloaded the 4 kext files and used the suggested program to install. Restarted and my machine seems fine still, but Netflix is still giving me the same error.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I can't be the only person experiencing this, right?

Other possibly relevant info: installed 10.5.6 using the Dell EFI 1.1 via two USB stick method, since updating to 10.5.7 (note that Netflix stopped working prior to 10.5.7 update) I've installed the newer EFI extensions

I'm also experiencing the same error. Not sure if it's related but I installed Plex and the Netflix plugin around the same time.

FWIW, it is still working for me (watching blade runner as we speak/I type). Works for me in 10.5.6 and 10.5.7.

Could this be some sort of network issue for you?

No, I don't think so. Netflix has a page set up for you to test Silverlight streaming with different settings, and I can watch it fine until I enable DRM. If you look at the thread I linked to, other people with hacktintoshes seem to be having the exact same issue, and it's apparently related to SMBIOS which if I understand correctly allows the operating system to read information from the BIOS.

Unfortunately, the fix that apparently worked for some people there does not seem to correct my problem.

I tried to download the linked files (from insanelymac.com) but the website has some database error. is there any other way to fix this issue/another link to those files?

If anyone's interested, I think I figured it out. I believe it was because of some things I had disabled in the BIOS - specifically onboard LAN I believe. After reenabling, that seemed to do the trick. I don't know if having it enabled at some point and then disabling it screwed something up, but that definitely appeared to be the solution.

I guess it might have something to do with how Netflix/Silverlight identifies a particular machine in order to authenticate it, but I really have no idea.

genius! it worked! i cant believe all that needed to be done was change the BIOS. I enabled the onboard LAN, tried netflix and it worked. To test and make sure it wasnt a coincidence, i rebooted with it disabled and netflix gave me the DRM message. so I guess we found the source of the problem.

now i just have to figure out how to solve the choppiness issue...

PS - as a side note, I had disabled the onboard LAN to solve a multi-times-a-day kernel panic problem. it worked and i havent had a problem since... i just hope enabling this doesnt cause the problem to come back.

From what I know from other Hackintoshes, many licenses, DRM, and other machine identifiers are tied to the en0 network interface, which is integrated ethernet is most cases. Disabling en0 causes Time Machine, iTunes Authorizations, and apparently Netflix to stop working.
