Got it all going again with Conq's technique plus the help of others regarding booting into safe mode. All's well that ends well. What a great bunch of geeks! Thanks a lot.

All is beautiful. Booted with -X removed dsdt file and reinstalled dellefi1.1. Rebooted and i worked. Thank you everyone for the assistance.

Cool! I used the Conq technique and reinstalled melkort's trackpad driver and aboutthismac.pkg and everything's back to the way it was. Very nice.

This will be the last major update before Snow. And this update is very solid. Even if Snow fails to run on mini-9, I would be happy using this version in the foreseeable future.

Oh - don't forget to run Permission Repair after the install.

I did the stand alone update, got the weird video/screen issue. I followed the help guidelines here, initially had some trouble trying to figure out the '- x' thing. Anyways, eventually I seemed to get the hang of it, ran DellEFI as instructed, rebooted, ran DellEFI again as instructed, everything seems happy here now.

Incidentally, prior to the update I was having trouble with USB devices being recognized, including external ODD. Now everything seems OK.

Followed Conq's instructions (but downloaded the non-Combo updater) - everything seems to be working, also ran AboutThisMac.pkg to restore the correct processor info. GeekBench reported a little improvement from 919 to 930.

For those running DellEFI 1.2a5/Chameleon 2.0RC1 and struggling to see the boot: text, here's a visual guide:

That was actually a big problem with 10.4 which was fixed with 10.5, a lot of people trashed their OS by having programs running while Software Update was optimizing the system. Just a little ancient history from a long time Mac user.
Conq thanks for posting the step by step directions for updating. I'll give it a go tomorrow.

Instead of pounding away on the control key, just hold it down during the Dell boot screen, and keep it held until the apple boot screen pops up. That'll pretty much guarantee you'll boot into safe mode.
