Its caused by the mirroring option being selected. Search for
mirrordisplays on this forum and follow those instructions- No other suggested options worked for me but this did.

Just to share my experience..

I just upgraded the OSX 10.5.7 online (from 10.5.6) without referring to any forum and that was a disaster... the display was all torn up..

I searched this forum and found this thread. The steps I used..

1. I powered down and rebooted into safe mode (basically hit "-" and the enter "-x")
2. This brought me to the safe mode of the desktop
3. I ran the 1.2a5 with the settings for :
"reinstall Chameleon 2.0RC1...."
"Reinstall Dell Mini 9 extensions"
"Hide DellEFI files"
4. Hit Install and follow through till it rebooted
5. It was all good after that..

I am very thankful that I did not need to reinstall the OSX again. Thanks to this thread! Hope this helps someone out there too!

I knew I should have just ignored the update. I waited this long because I just didn't feel like dealing with it, but today after seeing that update in the list again as I updated iTunes to 8.2, I figured i'd give it a shot.

Downloaded everything directly to my Mini, ran the combo update and rebooted. First time trying to get into safe boot with -x froze so I hard rebooted and tried again. I got in, ran DellEFI 1.2 and did a custom install, only checked the Mini 9 Extensions and the recreate dsdt.aml file. Everything appeared to work and rebooted.

Now, no matter how many times I try, I cannot even get into the login screen, safe boot or not. Nothing plugged in but the AC adapter and it just refuses to do anything after going to the blue screen. I've left it for a half hour and it dosen't move.

Anything I can do, or is this going to end up being a reinstall?


EDIT: Got it working. Took a SYSLINUX USB drive that I used to install OSX to boot up correctly into safe mode, had to manually delete dsdt.aml through a sudo command and then re-run DellEFI twice, once to "remove" and then again to recreate one.

Remember for those of you who have your Users directory on the SDHC, say /Volumes/Users, remember to make a guest account or at least a temporary account on the root volume /Users before you update OSX.
This is because your SDHC will not be mounted when you safe boot due to the driver not loading so you won't be able to login.
Make the guest account with admin rights, boot in safe mode then you will be able to login and rerun DellEFI to your hearts content!

Did you last run DellEfi 1.1 or 1.2a5? For 1.2a5, you have to hold "Shift" while booting, until it asks you for the startup disk; hit enter. I never used 1.1, but it appears you have to type "-x" at some point during startup. You should see a login window that says "Safe Boot" in red letters at the top.

Just updated to 10.5.7 and it works! thanks to conq for the step-by-step guide.

I downloaded the combo update, the installation took around 12min. Then during reboot (actually during shutdown), it froze. After 5min, I forced it to power down (hold the power button for a few seconds). During the first startup it got stuck (grey screen with apple), but rebooted itself after 5min or so, and the 2nd time it managed to boot into safe mode (I pressed "Shift" both times). I ran DellEfi 1.2a5 with the following options only:
- Reinstall DM9 extensions
- Remove custom dsdt.aml file
- Disable hibernate
- Fix bluetooth
After the update with DellEfi, reboot again into safe mode. This time, run DellEfi (yes, again!) with the options
- Generate dsdt.dml
- Fix bluetooth (not sure this option is required for the 2nd time also).
Finally, reboot a 3rd / 4th time, without holding Shift to not get into Safe mode again -- and, [drums] -- we're in 10.5.7.

hey all. i successfully loaded 10.5.6 to my mini a few weeks ago and hadn't bothered to upgrade it to 10.5.7.. after reading through every page of this thread, i figured it was safe to do it now. well, i followed the mcdrew instructions using 1.2a and now i can't finish the boot (be patient with me, i was raised windows and linux).
I went through and installed 10.5.7 using the incremental update and then booted safe and selected the first four check boxes.. one note is that it said that i already had the adst (whatever they were called) so i figured i shoudl delete those and restart, then recreate them. well i did that, and since then ive never been able to boot into safe mode all the way to run dellefi for the second time. i've booted a ton of times with different args including every combination of -x, -f and -v that i coudl think of.
if i booted regular, it woudl get to the grey screen with teh apple and the little spinny thing and would spin forever (waited 20 mins the first time)
So, since then ive just been retrying with -x (safe) and -v (i assume verbose) so i can see what is really happening.
the last three commands in the boot (at which point it just stops moving) are:
Jul 2 12:08:07 macmini ntpdate[57]: can't find host time.apple.com
Jul 2 12:08:07 macmini ntpdate[57]: no servers can be used, exiting
Jul 2 12:08:08 macmini /usr/sbin/ocspd[62]: starting

and that is where it has been for the last 10 minutes

try disabling bluetooth in the BIOS setup, then restart. and if you have 1.2a5 installed, try the "ignore cache" startup method after disabling bluetooth.
