Installed 10.5.7 combo update last night. Took about an hour total for the download, install and the reinstall of the "About this Mac" and the two finger scrolling kext. I used DellEFI 1.1. Was a straight forward process. The only issue I ran into was on the initial reboot. The login screen appeared all gray and distorted (maybe the "-x" command didn't take). I rebooted and the login displayed back as expected.

I have not noticed any improvement in battery life.

I finally got around to installing 10.5.7 on my primary Dell Mac mini 9, after trying it out on another Dell mini 9 as well as my desktop Mac mini.

What a smooth update this was! Thanks to the guys who keep on top of this stuff!


I ran Monolingual after the update & reclaimed 650 MB of disk space. Now I'm going to repair permissions & use the computer for a while to see how stable this really is.

Installed 10.5.7 last night with tips from this thread. Went perfectly.

One tip, if you are having trouble getting to the boot prompt to enter -x, or just dont know what that means, or arent sure you're getting it right...
you can substitute holding down shift from power on/reboot until at the safe mode login screen (where it asks for your password). holding down shift = safe mode, and passing -x as a boot flag = safe mode. i believe they are equivalent.

This means hold down shift a looooong time, your finger might get tired but it works fine. I actually held it down from the initial restart all the way through the double reboot to the login screen. not sure if thats really needed but it works

One thing that I had to do that I didn't see mentioned was replace the dvd player software reset to only using an internal dvd drive. I had previously hex edited it so the dvd player software so it would would work with an external USB drive, and that file was replaced during the .7 combo update I used. (I don't know if it was because I used the full .0 to .7 update vs the .6 to .7 update.)

FWIW, my first attempts failed... I thought I had followed conq's directions to the T, but it turned out that I had an older version of DellEFI. Once I upgraded that to the newer one that is mentioned, it went without a hitch.

I am hosed. I can get into safe mode but normal boot takes me to a grey screen with the spinning beach ball. I have tried everything I can think of, Dell 1.1, 1.2, deleting Extras folder, everything I can think of. Help??

it took me two re-runs of DellEFI 1.2 to get it back right ... one re-run wasn't enough.

Oh its been like 10 reruns, now i get a grey screen without any spinning anything, totally nothing, where do I go from here?

Was able to update to 10.5.7 with no problems thanks to this guide. Haven't seen any sort of battery life improvement, though.

Combo update with Conq's instructions worked great for me.
