I was having issues with my 10.5.6 install so I started over, re-formatting and re-installing 10.5.0. Then, following the original How To, I upgraded to 10.5.7 instead of 10.5.6. I needed to do safe boots (-x) the whole way to get it to work since it went into a loop during the account setup process in 10.5.0, but didn't have a single problem once I did the safe boots (knock on wood).

FYI I used DellEFI 1.2a5.

Hope this helps. I'm not much of a poster here but this forum has been invaluable and was huge in my decision to buy the Mini 9 in the first place. Thanks to all!
Thanks for sharing. This is exactly what I needed to know.

Annoyingly, I get an 'invalid checksum' error when I try to mount either the Combo updater or the 10.5.6 to 10.5.7 updater. Although I can skip the checksum validation on mount, the installer's own validation step also fails, so I can't proceed.

Not sure if this will help anyone, but it might (and it can't hurt to mention it):

This morning my Mac (proper Mac not a Dell Mini) at home updated itself to x.x.7, all went OK except it changed the screen resolution and other settings which meant the monitor wouldn't work correctly. I've seen this before with previous updates, so knew to just change the settings back to the correct ones and reboot.

Now I've no idea if this issue is going to kick up on the Dell Mini or not (my Mini still not arrived!), and if it does what the symptoms are, but like I said, it can't hurt but too mention it.

If you're looking for free alternatives... try OnyX
If You have not removed some parts of SystemEssentials during the install,
browse with Finder with these directories for wasted disk storage:
/System/Library/Speech/Voices (Bruce is over 600MB!)
/Library/Screen Savers (be sure to check the preferences, i had some problems getting my mini from the sleep after removing screen saver that was active in preferences)
/Library/Desktop Pictures
/Library/Dictionaries
/Library/Documentation/Help (it's safe to remove all help files - first usage attempt can get application quit)
For sure You all know some other components that can be removed.. however these few directories are easy to find and sometimes installing special applications to safe space is not the best solution

Hope this helps... it's my first message to mydellmini board. i'm very pleased with this community... all of you helped me with buying the right netbook and quickly setup OS X.

I have 17" MacBook Pro and I love it in my work but I was missing the mobility and possibility to freely surf the net after-hours. iPhone is not suitable for me (i usually kill phones in 3-9 weeks so I use the cheapest Nokias) and now I'm happy with my Dell Mini 9 the best communicator ever

Help!!! Bluescreen after first round of DellEfi 1.1. Hooked up to external monitor and was able to finish Conqs instruction. Reboot, still blue screen. Obviously a video conflict, but I am clueless how to fix. I can still attach to external monitor, but where do I go from here? Please, any replies need to be simple step by step. I am new to this. Appreciate any kindness extended. Thank you!

Aiieee ... it borked me ... I just ran it at the office (where I have no back-up gear for the it) before having read the forum; I've run previous updates with no problems whatsoever. Should have known there be at least one to foul things up. Don't have the tools to mess with it right now, so I'll have to perform the software surgery tonight.

Dang ... and just when I had Garage Band and NI's Kore Player both playing nicely on it ... glad I got the tracks done LAST night instead of trying to work on them today, lol.

Live and learn ...

No, Bruce is 1.6 mb. The entire Voices folder is about 725 mb.

I have mine setup to quiet boot. I thought that I could go into safe mode by hitting control, and then doing -x, but it doesn't seem to be working. It just continues booting normally. How exactly do you get into the menu screen?

Edit: nevermind, it worked. Just hold ctrl, there is no need to type in -x.

I followed Conq's instructions and the install went perfectly.

Next I just reran DellEFI (selecting only to reinstall the extensions) and everything works again.

conq's instructions probably will work too (although I haven't tried them and you shouldn't need to reinstall the dsdt), but I now have 10.5.7 working.
Hi, I did the update and it boots into OS X but I wind up with a white screen (with some distortion) and a box in the middle of it. How do I go into single user mode and manually patch the files, or is there another way to recover? (I don't have an external monitor) Thanks!
